What’s going on in the UFC these days?

I’ll start off by saying that I haven’t watched any MMA fight, much less a UFC fight, in probably 5 years. Needless to say, I have no idea what’s going on in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, specifically in the UFC.

I started watching the UFC back in 2006, and watched it religiously until about 2014. A lot of my favorite fighters started losing and retiring and i just lost interest.

After quickly glancing through the rankings, I noticed that I recognize a few names from when I was watching, but most of the fighters I came to love are long gone. That said, instead of reading a ton about what’s what, I thought I’d strike up a conversation about it with those that know.

If I am to get back into this, I wanna know who to watch, what’s worth seeing, and what I can pass on. Also, I’m a big Heavyweight fan, so if somebody could give me the skinny on that division, I’d be much obliged. I know Stipe Miocic is the HW champ...he was a contender some years ago.

Lay it on me!

This videos shows all the champs you missed. The videos are timestamped so they start with the champs from 2014

Ha no sir. Just lost interest in the sport. I was a diehard fan of it for a long time but life happened and my love for it just disappeared.

The years you watched we're probably better than the years you missed. Now, if you catch the bug again, you have a shit ton of fights you can catch up on.

Any talk of them continuing it or are they going to allow these guys to have their own sponsors on their trunks again?

It sounds dumb but the different trunk styles and colors made the fighters unique. Reflected their personalities if you will.

They’re going to be going to be having a new apparel deal with Venum...

Not entirely sure about fighters being able to have their own sponsors though.

You missed the entire mcgregor era. Now mma is about talking trash and getting followers.

Completely agree with this.

Made it easier for casuals to remember who was who, too. GSP walking out in his gi, BJ's black bel shorts etc.

Without making a major effort to keep your finger on the pulse, remembering a fighter when they only fight twice a year and all look the same is bloody nightmare

Check out fight pass and search "Johnnie Walker" see if you agree with the Sherdoggers that he's the guy who can beat Jones.

Some PPV's since 2014 you've missed that would probably be worth checking out.

It didn't went all bad, like most people will claim. The thing is that you witnessed a very special era of MMA that was full of charismatic specimen. The insane LHW and HW division of this era is long gone and MMA is more like boxing and other sports now and less of a circus. This isn't a good thing if you want to be entertained, sure, but it's noting the UFC has much control over, just like with HW boxing.

There are a lot of fun fighters nowadays too but the divisions are extremely big it's hard to keep an eye on the guys who are worth seeing without having to watch a lot of mediocre fights, if you know what I mean.

It's like with most thing that get too mainstream and try to maintain it's status. Like with musicians and stuff.

There are a lot of great fights in the last few years tho, you should look for a list of the best fights of all time and check those you missed. I know it sucks if you haven't a connection to these guys, but give it a try. Some of the best fights of all time happened in the last five years.

I would say the UFC of today has most of its talent in the lower divisions.
LW, FW, BW and the Women's StrawWeight divisions are the most stacked

The things you find to be of concern suggest to me that you were never really highly keen on actual MMA.

Makes sense. One question, and this is one of the main reasons I quit watching....is the UFC still handing title shots to guys that have no business getting them? Dudes wanting to try their hand at MMA and being given marquee fights because it sells PPV’s? I know it’s a business but that stuff drove me nuts.
Ha, yes UFC is still greedy as fuck and hardly does anything to legitimize the 'sport'. Since you been gone, they came up with a fake belt, called the Baddest Mother F'er belt, where Masvidal fought Nate, and Nate got absolutely destroyed like everyone knew. But hey they gotta keep interesting and make a fake lame belt to sell PPVs.

Also Conor doesn't fight at LW anymore, but wants to fight the LWs at WW hoping to get another title shot at LW. Conor was even recently begging Dana for a Diego Sanchez (remember him) fight. And while we on it, Diego has gone fucking bonkers with this Fabia dude. Check out the Diego peacocking during his Bruce Buffer introduction.
