I have not watched every match to know for sure but I didnt any Judokas in those events and given the popularity of Judo and its history with the Gracies you would think there wouldve been more Judo vs BJJ type fights.

Is there a reason for this or just complete coincidence?

Oleg was a Judo blackbelt, like most Sambo guys I imagine. So he'd be the first UFC champion Judo BB. Incidentally Rorion wouldn't let Oleg in until Royce wasn't doing the tournies anymore... Remco was the token Judo guy Rorion selected for Royce to beat before that.

after the Gracies left the scene there still weren't so many Judokas in the UFC because it's not such a big sport in the USA compared to wrestling I imagine (plenty of wrestlers entered the UFC at that time and ever since of course).

You mean elite judokas or just judo practitioners?
Don Frye was a black belt in judo.
Obviously plenty of Japanese with a Judo background then and today

That's what I was wondering , you would think the tourneys wouldve mostly been Judo vs BJJ.

Did any of Kimuras students compete?

Yes. There was one. Hybrid Judo style vs Royce

Remco Pardoel easily beat everyone on the way to the final with Royce which he lost by lapel choke. He was pretty decent for a guy with no cross-training:

LOL i love this "Gracies made sure Royce would win by picking easy competition" shit is STILL going around 25 years later!

Yeah, they held Oleg out but somehow mistakenly let in Ken Shamrock who was a wayyyy bigger threat to Royce (and destroyed Oleg when they met in a superfight).

And Remco was the "token" judo guy "for Royce to beat", yeah I'd select a 6-3 250 lb judoka as a token. EASY WIN for anyone right? Remco nearly killed Orlando Weit with elbows to the skull pinned against the ground. No threat there, easy win for a 170-lb man! Hand picked to fail right?

They also somehow let guys like Patrick Smith in, twice, Smith breaking the face of the "ninja" he fought bare knuckle. Easy opponent! Yeah let's take the guy who won the Sabaki challenge, he will be a cakewalk....

...but NOT that Oleg guy! He's too dangerous!!! We will run from him as fast as we possibly can because....omg he knows Judo! We're scared!

So bring on these easy fights like Shamrock and Pardoel and Pat Smith, we've got it rigged!

What a crock of shit.

Which Gracie are you?

Bill Wallace on the shenanigans pulled by Rorian to set Royce up to win. Not sure I believe EVERYTHING he says.

Already assessed here:
