What's the story behind this inane "look"? That's become his signature, no?
 
Werdum -Stipe should have been a war.

most of werdums losses (sergei, overeem) are from him not trusting his striking. When he does trust it, he can hang with Hunt on the feet.
 
To be fair, Stipe wasn't considered a world beater when he fought Doom. He was largely considered to be an average guy that managed to work his way to a title shot. He wasn't on Doom's level so to speak at least that's how a lot of people looked at him. Doom was trying for some hilarious style points on Stipe. After all, how awesome would it have been if Werdum clowned him and knocked him out?

Werdum simply got arrogant. He was on a tremendous roll at that point, and his striking was working for him even against strikers.

If he fought like he did against Fedor, Stipe wouldn't have gotten that belt... but woulda coulda shoulda... easy to get carried away at the top.

This. People forget the context before the fight: NOBODY gave Stipe a chance. All the talk leading to the fight was centered around Werdum being the HW GOAT. Stipe was view as a good but beatable heavyweight, and the UFC treated him as such. Overeem, JDS, and Ngannou all got big promotional pushes by the UFC, but all fell short.

he just barely started training striking with mirko crocop during his fight with sergei lmao.
 
Even though I hate to say it, I don't think any championship loss was as one-sided as Shogun vs Jones. Many champ losses like Cain vs JDS 1, GSP vs Serra 1, and Aldo vs Conor can be written off as the champ making a mistake early in the fight and the challenger capitalizes in devastating fashion. Shogun sadly was beaten up and outclassed from start to finish.

Although honestly Werdum's boxing post Chute Boxe always tended to have some pretty sloppy technique to it, a lot of chin out rushes at opponents he got away with due to the threat of his grappling.

His striking had improved a lot, and he was winning fights with that skillset, and it seems like he became enamored with an inflated sense of how good it had actually become.

But, yeah, chasing someone, around, face first, arms splayed wide seemed pretty insane to me, and still does.

Really though I think his striking was always rather flakey and if anything he'd gotten a bit lucky not to be punished for it before then, he did definately have finishing ability with his knees but his boxing defence was always questionable, arguebly it got worse after he broke with Crocops team and went to Chute Boxe.
 
One of Werdum's weaknesses is getting over aggresive when he gets tagged. Its helped him the past but its very reckless thing to do. Chute Boxe staple.

I know, but it showed a tendency that would reappear several times in his career. And aside from Stipe it wasn’t that he actually got out struck.

Yeah he was supposed to lose. But he didn't even try. To go from that legendary win to pretty much quitting before the rematch started is pathetic.
