I did something to my knee in BJJ a few weeks ago. It's that bony ridge right below the knee cap. I googled it and I guess it's called the tibial tuberosity, basically it's where the patellar tendon attaches to the tibia. Any way, it hurts like a mf'er. It's fine when I'm doing squats or running or any other exercise, but is extremely tender to the touch. As soon as my knee touches the mat, wow. I've been taping a piece of foam padding to it and then pulling my knee sleeve over that in order to get through BJJ practice but even with that it's still painful. And it's clearly inflamed, looks like a golf ball on that side vs just a slight bump on the normal leg.

Anyone else ever experience this?

Just get some knee pads. Sounds like you just bruised or banged the bone.

sounds like bursitis. A bursa is a fat pad in the knee and most likely got inflammed from training. Try to minimize compressing the spot, pass the guard from the feet or stay in combat base.

I've had it before and it took a few weeks to go away, but I didn't stop training and rest it like I should have.

I just ordered a pair of the Asics knee pads from Amazon.

I had something similar - the doctors told me I probably just bruised the bone or sprained the knee. My (incredibly reliable) self-diagnosis came up with bursitis, but the longer it persists the less sure I am of it. Still not sure what happened, but it's been about 3 months and I still don't have enough strength to put my heel to my butt while standing and I can't kneel on that knee.

Best advice: See a doctor ASAP.

Knee issues are things you don't want to mess around with.

Dr asap

Knee joint is very complex.

Also, knee pad with gel or silicone. Foam is crap

Agree with whoever said Burstisis

It took me out for 5 weeks, I would not be surprised if you get some swelling soon, I had mine drained but there was no point, you just have to rest it and let it heal naturally

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00DYU6Z0W/ref=pe_385721_37038051_TE_dp_1

So rest , do strength work etc and then buy some of the above and go back to training ,

Do not keep training on it if it hurts, you will just rupture the sacs that make the synovial fluid anymore and you will be out for longer, not what you want to hear but is true ! But good news is it should be fine long term

I've had it before. Not sure how I got it. It went away mysteriously as well. So hopefully the same happens to you.

Yea, sounds like Infrapatellar bursitis.

Bursitis' suck in general cause there isn't much you can do to speed healing. Ice, compression, and rest/avoiding painful contact are your keys.

I don't ever recommend NSAIDs, not a fan of any drugs and they potentially inhibit the natural healing process, but you can take them if you like.

I don't think it's bursitis.

If I look at this pic:

bursitis-of-knee.jpg

The pain is much lower than any of those bursa. Like halfway between what they have marked as patellar tendon and shin bone.

Is it possible you bruised the head of your fibula?

Either way, as others have said, you should probably go get it checked out. Chances are the doctor will not have anything useful to say other than "rest it," but it never hurts to get it checked ou.t

Not to hijack this thread but I have a knee question too.
I'll say up front that I have had my ACL reconstructed on the knee in question.
Basically I was playing a lot of open guard yesterday and my partner was putting a lot of pressure forward. I wasn't going for any subs or even trying to sweep because he needed to work his guard passing. I was just maintaining and making him work. Basically I was fine until I stood up after. My knee felt like it was locking and I am having some serious trouble walking now. My mobility in that knee is horrible now.
Has anyone had any "pressure" issues when rolling? I didn't twist or extend my knee(like a kneebar does) at all so I feel like it was a pressure injury. I can't get to the doc until tomorrow and I wonder if anyone might have any hunches as to what might be going on.
The only side pressure that could have been suspect was when I relooped on the sleeve and he tried to pressure forward. Didn't feel anything at the time.

Any instability is going to be ligament related
Any locking or catching is going to be meniscus related
That being said a medical professional really needs to see you in person to diagnosis you.

Yep I hear ya. Man I hope it isn't ligament damage.
