I was just thinking about weighted body weight exercises and wondered if anyone does weighted push ups. Would that help much on a push day or are dips the way to go? I just started doing weighted dips for the first time and I have to say they're fantastic.

IDK. If I had any real insight, I wouldn't have given you a smartass comment.

I don't see how weighted pushups would give you anything you wouldn't already be getting from BP.

Yes you can. Generally closed chain exercises are safer....ie you're better off with push ups over bench....it's difficult to add resistance as effectively as with bench press but it can be done with vests, resistance bands, chains, etc....I think you can definitely give it a try....though weighted dips are a much easier way to go...for a closed chain exercise with which u can also add weight in an easier manner ..

backpack with weights inside are the resistance.

I have always wanted to give them a go. I know they can be beneficial and great on the core. Man....i think i may try them out the next lifting session.

Weighted pushups are good, not as good as weighted dips IMO but they are a good change up.

After my bench, dip and corner push press is done I either do a few sets of clapping pushups with a weight vest on or do blast strap pushups with a vest. All for the reasons already explained by DevilsSon.

google Power Pushup 2, its awesome, I used it for a while, but nothing beats weighted dips or bench

Heavy weighted one arm pushups would be sick. Weighted handstand pushups would be sickening.

Yeah, sure. Always good to find slightly differnt ways to challenge your muscles. The only problem is finding a cheap and easy way to add weight, if all else fails get someone to pile plates on your back after you're in position. I like using bands looped across my back, excellent tricpe ecercise and a good way to make press training portable for when you're away from the gym.

weighted push ups are an incredible exercise i definately recommend them..ive done them with a plate on my back, or even had my training partner sitting on my back..both kicked my ass.
even better, for MMA training/powerlifting..to strengthen your stabilizing muscles, try setting up 2 ropes hanging parallel shoulder width apart, and tie loops at the bottom of each, a few inches off the ground..then set up to do pushups with you hands in the loops and your body elevated off the ground...sounds like a pain in the ass to set up but you can do it at home or on any squat rack..and trust me, they are harder than they sound...and build comprehensive overall strength in your upperbody

I have read before that body weight exercises are more taxing on the central nervous system, so they can force you to recruit more muscle fibers. I'm not a specialist on any of this by any means so take from it what you want. If there is anything to that, then maybe there is some reason to do weighted pushups over bench press.

Its easiest if you have a partner to set the weight on your back and even keep it balanced throughout your sets. I have done weighted pushups with kettlebells, and it is a pain in the arse to get the weight between my shoulder blades so it stays.

The CNS stuff doesn't make a lot of sense to me - I can't see how less weight would tax you more.

Band pushups would be the way to go, I'd think.

Thanks for the input guys.

A kettle ball? Did you have no choice because I would want to try anything before that, and the idea of having someone balance the plates was what I was thinking to do.

haha. Yeah, a weight plate would be MUCH easier. At the time all I had around was a kettlebell.

I'd like to be able to do push ups with someone sitting on my back, who is 180+ pounds. The most I've worked up to was 75 pounds in plates for 10 reps. But I was using 25 pound plates and it was becoming a bitch getting them onto my back...
