Weight Cutting

Why make more weight classes those dudes are always going to try to cut to the lowest weight they can... if the ufc was smart they’d impliment a weight check leading up to the fight. That would make it so they can’t be cutting that crazy amount the week of the fight.

Just have usada do periodic hydration test

Same day weigh ins. You weigh in an hour or two before you fight. The stamina cost offsets the rewards of a big cut. I have seen this in local shows and it works. People cut a few pounds but if you cut too much you gas and fight sluggish.

I don’t think they would, so many 55 pounders have said they would rather have a 65 pound division. Having them be 15 pounds heavier is just way too much.

God damn I couldn’t imagine fighting after even spending 45 minutes in a sauna. Maybe I’m just a puss but I spent almost an hour in there and all energy was gone from my body.

Why can’t they just fight 170 then it’s only 5pounds more?

It is definitely a problem but I don't know the answer. More divisions would help but the MMA is already pretty thin in each division. So, adding more divisions to the UFC might dilute it further. I heard about an idea to measure hydration levels before allowing fighters to compete. I like that but it sounds expensive. I mean I have no idea what it takes to test that but imagine a fight card with 13 fights 2 fighters each. 26 "hydration tests". What does that entail and cost? Maybe not sustainable as a business for promotions.

Most people treat it too simplistically and say weight cutting should be banned. But how the hell do you do that? Fighters will always seek a size and strength advantage by weight cutting.

God damn man, it won’t be long til someone in the ufc dies. Reading this about Anthony Smith, also the Uriah Hall thing just happened recently. Plus the countless others. I’m really all for doing the divisions in 10 pound incrimates. Do 165, 175, 185, 195. Shits ridiculous.

Agreed that it's getting very dangerous. All it takes is for a coach to push his fighter too much in the wrong circumstances and somebody could die.

However, I don't think weight classes have anything to do with it. A fighter is going to cut weight to be at their biggest regardless. It's unfortunate, but under current rules it's only a given that fighters have to cut weigh to be relevant. Heavyweights are the only class where a lot of times guys don't have to cut. You still have guys like derrick lewis, stefan struve, lesnar, etc. But anybody that weighs in under 260 generally indicates they are fighting at a true weight.

Weigh-in 5 hours before the event. That gives time for the weigh-ins and warming up before the fights. Anyone dumb enough to try to cut 10-20lbs before the fight suffers the consequences and anyone that misses weight loses 20% of their purse.

Imagine this though...if nobody cut huge weight, nobody would need to. As soon as 1 guy decides to , it's a domino effect. Fights would be so much more fun too if fighters were 100% energized. So what to do? Given that fighters have to cut some weight just to make sure they are not over, allow 10lbs max. Make fighters weigh in within 10 lbs of fight weight 2 weeks before, 5lbs 1 week before (to prevent yoyo weight), and then fight weight 1 day before. Do this because no fighter wants to cut huge amounts of multiple times in a short window. Also the UFC should provide monetary incentives for perhaps non-mandatory weigh ins. What I mean by this, you still have the aforementioned, but prior to that fighters can be given an option to weigh in every week for 3 weeks prior to that. If they make weight, give them a percentage of their contracted fight purse. UFC has money, and UFC maintaining healthy fighters obviously makes business sense because how many scratched fights have we seen due to bad cuts? And loss of fan interest.....A lot. It would also promote healthier fighters down the road, partly because we won't have as many injuries from guys who are exhausted and trying to fight.

A way to stop weight cutting is to measure the weight of fighters right before they step in the cage to ensure they are fighting close to their weight class e.g. If you are 175 lb when you step in the cage on fight night and are fighting at 155 you have to fight at 170 next fight.

Never seen this thread before...

More divisions = even more weight cutting

They should limit the weight cutting somehow. Fighter should be forced to fight close there natural weight. Maybe weigh a fighter before he signs a contact and that he get a offer with the weight class options he got and than he signs the contract on these terms.
But i think it's very hard to realize this.

This might be a option. At least the fighters really has the same weight.
But if this is introduced, the weight limits need to be less strict i think. It might be hard for a championship fight to reach this half pound limit, that short.

Because it would reduce the gaps between weight classes you can cut to and *maybe* make the cuts less severe.

Most martial art tournaments operate this way..its a much fairer system.. But unfortunately it may negatively affect the business side as if one of main eventers or stars fail to make weight day of..theres little time for the promotion to react or compensate fans ..but i dont real care about that as a fan or martial artist im all for fairer competition whatever the costs.. And the health benefits .There pro fighters after all they shpuld make weight everytime
