I'd want Weidman to get past Rockhold & Jacare before going for a LHW bout
Agreed - I think fortunately for everyone, this is a done deal. Weidman will most certainly fight Rockhold or Jacare next.
good points brought up too, I suppose there's no reason to think he'd be wrecked, and seeing DC toss Josh Barnett into the canvas like he did made me think Chris probably can't handle him.
Barnett is a big tough dude but he's not a skilled folk/greco/freestyle wrestler, he's a catch wrestler who specializes in submissions. DC couldn't get anywhere near taking Jones down and was taken down by both AJ and Jones.
People forget that Weidman beat both Ryan Bader and Phil Davis in collegiate wrestling, where he wrestled 197lbs and was one of the highest ranked guys in the country. He most definitely has the skill and physicality to grapple with guys at LHW.
I just would rather see him get past Gus or Rashad before going against DC.
Here is where we disagree. If Weidman wins his next fight, that would make it 4 consecutive title defense, more specifically that read:
Silva, Machida, Belfort, Rockhold/Jacare
Arguably the best strength of schedule in the history of that division, most certainly for title defenses. You don't earn that status and risk taking a superfight in the division above you
if its not for the title.
The title absolutely has to be on the line. Weidman shouldn't even be allowed to 'moonlight' at 205, like the gimmie fights Anderson took against unraked opponents like Irvin and Bonnar.
P4P ranked champions should only fight other champions if they take a superfight. I am sure Weidman would want to join the ranks of Randy Couture and BJ Penn in being a two division champion. It is arguably the highest honor in the sport and certainly the stuff of legends.
Maybe Chris would exploit DC still coming together with his striking and land that mean left hook, or worse a left haymaker, then capitalize with viscious ground and pound, I can see that happening.
How'd you see that match up going?
I think Chris and DC matchup very well with each other. Chris manages distance and uses his length incredibly well. His timing is insane. DC is the better wrestler but Chris doesn't need to face him head on, he just needs to stay out of trouble.
DC struggled a lot with Jones and ultimately lost all the grappling exchanges because, to quote Daniel "he was big in the clinch." I think Chris will feel big in the clinch too, because its a combination of size and technique. DC can handle guys with one or the other, but he's not
dominating another wrestler with both.
Both guys have fair to midland gas tanks. Both guys can take a punch. I'd give Chris a small edge in striking and length, DC a reasonable edge in wrestling.
I hate to say this because its really only predicated on a few things, but when both guys matchup this close, I'm going to go with the guy I didn't see give up. I'd pick Weidman.
