Just rewatched the first round of the weidman fight, they kind of had the same approach minus the takedowns.
Their problem is their boxing, they were rightfully scared to attack romero with their hands so they tried to keep him at bay with kicks. They both looked weak and ineffective in doing so, I was very surprised to see how Romero not only checked all the leg kicks of luke but he also landed several kicks of his own, much more powerful than rockhold's. He basically outkicked Luke fucking Rockhold.
Every time they landed a weak leg kick on romero they had no effect, when romero landed a body kick on weidman he destroyed his midsection. Everytime he landed a legkick on luke he drove him several feet across the octagon.
There was too much of a difference in therms of power and speed, romero was also the better striker than both.
Luke should have tried to kick the head and the body as there was no TD threat, but I don't think it would have made a difference. Romero is so much of a beast that he would have easily blocked his most powerful kicks with his arms and then continued to pressure him with his hands. Blocking rockhold's kicks would take a lot out of another fighter and could possibly even break one's arm, but romero is simply a different animal. I also noticed this in the whittaker fight, he was caught with a perfectly timed, perfectly placed, shin to the ribs kick to the midsection and just ate it like it was nothing.
He's really made of steel.
