News We have to come to a consensus on what Hash Browns are..

Yeah, we have. They’re fucking delicious. I don’t really care how they are shaped.

The first is the fast food version, the second is the homemade version. The rest are potatoes. (Still delicious)

As an Englishman?

One is most identifiable, whilst five looks like something off the Burger King breakfast menu.

No idea what the rest are.

Grated potatoes... How one smashes them or assembled them matters not...

1 is processed hash brown meal, 2 is hash browns, 3 is diced potatoes, 4 is freedom fries and 5 is salt...

If your toaster isn't shit with massive gaps you can actually toast frozen hash browns in like 2 regular toast cycles... As opposed to a while in the oven, but if your toaster is shit like mine, they can get stuck down the sides and it might ruin your day.

Like these normal guys, 25 in the oven, like 7 or 8 in the Toaster.

#2 is hard to get right, but the best, otherwise #1, you can pop them suckers in a toaster

These are hash browns:

The first picture is the McDonald's/frozen food version of hash browns.

The others are not hash browns and people who call them that are wrong. I love home fries (diced potatoes) and potatoes O'brien, but they aren't hash browns. The last one is basically tater tots.

Number 2 but fried potatoes in a skillet with some chopped up onions are pretty fucking great too.

Putting those in a toaster sounds like a terrible idea, but damn it am I intrigued.

It worked for me like 10 times in a row and I saved a lot of time, the one time it got stuck in the side I had to unplug the toaster and turn it upside and wack it for about 10 minutes to remove the bits.

All in all maybe broke even on time lol.

Hashed browns are finely chopped potatoes that are then fried. "Frozen" hash browns are square monstrosities.

I don't think it is a question of which are hash browns. I believe the question is which do you prefer? Hash is technically just chopping something into small pieces which probably results in cube type pieces if done with a knife. The small cubes are difficult to keep on a fork. I prefer the potatoes to be shredded like option 2 and shredding also fits the definition of hash. Shredded potatoes with a little oil added tend to stick together which makes them easier to eat with a fork. The fast food restaurants want to be able to deep fry them and have standardized portions so they press shredded potatoes into pieces that make that possible. They also want people to be able to eat them without having to supply a fork.

While I prefer the ones in the second picture, they would be messy to eat without a fork.

I consider it hash brown after I poop it out. If I had a blue Slurpee, I'll consider it hash blue.
