It's really not difficult to see that even a little bit of striking would benefit him greatly. Getting your face punched in while hunting for a takedown is a terrible idea and while it worked against lesser opponents he's taken tremendous damage in 2 short fights in the UFC.
Being able to set up takedowns with strikes would make him far more dangerous.
