But due to Aldo's injury he had to beat Mendes to get the real title shot. I don't know Mendes rank at the time but he was considered by many to be the second best fighter after Aldo.

I'd say it's more about stylistic matchups. A full camp Mendes may be able to beat Conor. Chandler and RDA could give him trouble as well. Both are shorter and have less reach than Conor.

Meanwhile, Conor starched the taller (but older and big fight choke artist) Cowboy. He could possibly beat Hooker who is bigger. He was also beating on Nate until he gassed.

Conor does have more resistance against similar size opponents, bar Cowboy. Alvarez looked noticeably smaller than Conor.

that's a fair point. But beating Mendes even on short notice was a significant win at that point. I do think it might have gone differently if Mendes had a full camp but it was still a very good win.

If Conor was bullying FW's then Izzy is bullying MWs, strikers are better off fighting at lighter weights for the reach/height advantage in a sport which is dominated by grapplers.

Max Holloway is taller than Conor and cant win at LW either, so it would be fine for Conor to move down and challenge him.

I think it's pretty clear at 155 that he doesn't have any exceptional punching power. The reason he did so well against guys like Alvarez was his insane accuracy

People always confuse being shitty at weight cutting with being big for a division. Two people who are exactly the same size can cut the same amount of weight for a fight, but one of them may have a much rougher time than the other due to all kinds of factors (nutrition, kidney resilience, muscle vs fat composition, etc.).

Aldo did have bad weight cuts at Featherweight, but he was still far from physically huge for the division, and his cuts to Bantamweight conclusively prove he was actually on the smaller side--he just needed to figure out how to cut better. Conor was clearly bigger.

looked to me like he was taking shots as well as throwing them. the cage control was mostly all Dustin, albeit back and forth. I mean, surely you're not biased or anything

I have maintained, since the day Conor was signed, that he is overrated.
But he won the first round against Poirier, it’s not even debatable imo. There is no way to score that for Dustin, he ate tons of hard shots.
I will say that at the end of rd 1, I was commenting that it was similar to Nate-Conor 1: Conor was breathing hard, and Poirier was able to eat Conor’s shots and stifle him more.
