Really? I have a friend and while that's what he expected in the end his takeaway was that its an anti-capitalist film. He gets fucked over at his job unjustly, his therapy is low quality and eventually cut because of poor funding for social services, his random act of violence gets lionized because he targeted Wall Street guys and so on.

It's not really anything because whenever it approaches a political stance it stops just soon enough to cash in without saying anything. Almost every part of that film exists as sterilized reference placed just carefully enough for half-smart film-goers to throw money at it in exchange for one or two contrived talking points.

Which is too bad, because it diminishes some iconic cinematography and a completely immersive performance from Pheonix.

I’m not too big on theology but it makes me think of a different interpretation I’ve heard of “blessed are the meek who will inherit the earth”.

If you're interested a little more in the beatitudes, they are a reworking of a Jewish text predating Christ (from Qum'ran). It was composed in a particular style not unlike poetry and the NT author follows the style of the Jews when composing that passage of the Bible.

Since it, like most of the Bible, is an attempt by a new cult at rebooting/finessing Jewish wisdom and replacing its authority (and much of the message) with their own, it can mean whatever the audience wants it to mean. In this context, it means different things to different people I think. To the poor, it means their humble lives will be righteously vindicated after their long suffering. To some elites, it means that they can drag along the peasantry with empty promises.

The word 'praus' is really complicated for us when translated this far along and so separated from its cultural context. It seems like the most cited/accepted definition is derived from a likeness to a good workhorse or warhorse. But what did the Greeks mean by this? At the very least, the horse would take a bridle and not throw its rider. But how general or specific was the term, and how closely did it follow onto a description of people? Was the controlled potential violence of a horse the thing, or was it the brokenness and subservience that made the connections? And how did that description of people change in meaning over time with the lexicon?

It's impossible to unravel, but a look at the wider context of the phrase and the message of Christianity doesn't really suggest that it refers to being a quiet badass; the badass part is not really relevant to an IRL Christ Walk because that's such an individual thing and Christ is inclusive, whereas the badass interpretation would be quite exclusive.

I hate having a holiday/day off in the middle of the week.

1. It feels like you have two separate Mondays in a single week
2. It throws off my internal calendar. I was legit sitting at my desk like "fuck, I have XYZ money in my account for ABC stuff I have to do and don't get paid for 2 weeks still." Then, later in the bathroom surfing IG while sitting on da throne my brain goes "wait, it's fucking Thursday you get paid in a week you idiot"

I normally can empathize with your woes but this is one time I don't give a tiny fraction of a fuck. I'm after busting my arse 6-7 days a week for 5 or so months, and any extra day I get an unassailable excuse to sleep in and not think about work is a huge bonus even if it means I'm not making any money (unlike people who get holiday pay, ahem.)

Merry fucking Christmas and have a lovely paid day off New Year.
