So, this happened.

I have Spanish-speaking in-laws in town for the holidays. They are comfortably fluent in English, but it's still their second language. Even though they're very well educated and previously lived in the US for several years, they're very self conscious about people hearing their accents or hearing them speaking Spanish. The husband is completely fluent but the wife sometimes struggles so that he has to translate to her. They generally only speak Spanish very softly when in public.

They were at a tourist attraction in St. Louis, and a middle aged woman heard them speaking Spanish, walked up to them, and said "English only! No Espanol!" and walked off. Naturally, this shook them and touched on a lot of insecurities.

First off, how big of a piece of shit do you have to be to do that? Second, it's a fucking tourist attraction. Are we to believe that all racist shit bag conservative white people speak the native language of every country they visit - France, Mexico, Germany, Italy? Third, how fucking myopic can you be that THAT is an issue that bothers you - people speaking a language you can't understand. That takes incredible privilege and ignorance. Fourth, if you're such a sack of shit that that does rattle your shit, stay the fuck out of the city and stay in the tiny town where you and your kin can leech off the productivity and tax dollars of dem tolerant liberal city dwellers.

My condolences to your in-laws. I genuinely think that is awful that they had this experience, and the person who did it was being an asshole. I hope it doesn't ruin their (or your) holidays.

Don't you think it's strange that there are constantly anecdotal single events of criminality made into threads on this site, yet you only get the "uhhh, what's the point, it's just one case" posts when it doesn't fit racist, xenophobic, or otherwise reactionary agendas? And, unlike in those cases re immigrants, this is one that has a clear, explicit inference of racial motivation.

By volume of posts, it undeniably leans right. Just look at any anecdotal thread about the inherent evil of Muslim refugees.

This is a fairly abstract question, but it cuts fairly directly to anti-refugee and anti-immigrant sentiment here in this forum, and here in this country.

Despite all the anecdotal articles you see shared here about migrants doing this and that, migrants are only marginally more likely to commit violence than citizens. Whether this is more due to being poor, being culturally anxious, or being naturally violent/incompatible with the host country's values is up for debate (among distinctly lopsided parties).

However, what we know is that under no rational analysis does a murder rate for migrants entering a developed country exceed or even approach 100 per 100,000.

So, assuming 1,000 international refugee populations are categorically facing certain death (a stretch) and their criminal element will represent a 1-in-1,000 murder rate (an even bigger stretch), do you still reject them on principle? And, if so, at what proportion do their lives become valuable enough in comparison to citizens?

Wife gets brother’s priority call in number, she gets some cusotmer rep to convince TO ticket control to release 3 seats they have already a blocked off to deal with the 1,000s of us that missed flights and are in line at the actual airport and all of a sudden we are on a flight leaving NOW (I’m in line) and we will be there for 5pm. In line now. Barring more weather and we will make it.

Went from Orlando to Montréal to Halifax to St Johns, could not land so plane back to Halifax, 1 hr sleep, to Toronto then (after being told all flights cancelled) managed to finagle our way on a flight to St. John’s. 34 hours non stop good times. On the bright side customer profitability and pricing strategy for the new year is updated

We finally made it but now no car seat lol. Could have been worse if we only showed up tomorrow and had to do another day of this.
