The proper training for these incidents is almost impossible to implement Department-wide in a big department like Dallas. Not every cop can be a social worker also. But some can!

Which is why every department should have a dedicated crisis intervention team that can respond to the emotionally or mentally disturbed individuals, suicidal cases, etc. Couple that with assisted diversion programs to get these people into the mental health and/or drug cessation programs they need instead of jail.

This is what I’ve been instrumental in implementing in my department and jurisdiction and hopefully I’ll be proud of the legacy I leave in that regard.

we had it happen a couple of times.
we had a restraint system called the "wrap" which would
subdue a subject without interfering with breathing, etc.
it was time consuming and sometimes difficult to deploy but the
result was humane detention for subsequent transport to whatever
facility was deemed appropriate.
