Your CPU is really dated, so consider that when buying a card. You're less than a year out from an upgrade imo.

Think RTX 3070 and comparable cards. That'll put you on the right track. You could go 3080 if you want to futureproof (or go 2K/4K), but a 3070 will be about the best you can do that's not going to brutally bottleneck your cpu at the moment.
If you can find one that isn't someone trying to sell it third party at like $3k.

Gaming laptops are all degrees of shit to me. Had one in my life and hated it. Never again.
I have one. Can confirm. The fans are constantly running.

It's great for just about anything else though to the point I'm half debating turning it into the system I use to try and video edit/stream off of.

It's an honorary title.
Not has honorary as the good Doctor... and honorary doctor in journalism

If he wants one, they can be gotten. You just gotta be a beast like me.

My younger sister would one up that by adding more sugar in the form of raisins. 2 types of sugar and 2 types of fat wasn't enough apparently.
Not a fan of raisins myself, and these days I barely have any sweet tooth at all.
Raisins on a grilled cheese?

It was never my intention to get a "gaming" laptop. I only bought one with an add-on graphics card because I thought that would avoid using system RAM for video. I see now that was a mistake. It still uses onboard video for 2D and therefore also uses system RAM and there's no way I can see to turn that shit off, and the NVidia card only kicks in for 3D so it's totally fucking useless to me. The bios interface has no options to speak of, for example.

My goal was to find one at the lowest cost I could manage with the best odds for being usable for at least 4 years and preferably a lot more in an office setting. Anyway, I'll have some specs for you in a couple of hours if you're still interested.

Not all of us make the money you do you fucker.

I forgot, are you AMD or Intel?

Intel. i7-8700k

I was going to go AMD with the 5950X, but Alder Lake being next year and my cpu still being pretty midgrade makes me want to wait. AMD has Intel on the ropes right now, but it's mainly because their node shrink was delayed. That's Alder Lake, so I wholly expect Intel to go back to being competitive (if not the premier at the top end) sometime next year.

Also Alder Lake is supposed to be using DDR5 RAM, so I'd like to avoid having to buy RAM twice if possible. If Alder Lake lives up to the expectations, I'll just go all in on it.

I'm sitting on an i7-6700k so I am still in the "capable" realm for PC gaming but I do worry I will need to upgrade. My damn mobo only has two slots for RAM though so I am admittedly half debating getting a new ASUS or AsRock mobo that is Intel based and just transfer everything I have right now to that and gte a bunch of RAM sticks.

Yeah, one of the dirty secrets of gaming laptops is that you're getting the discrete unit...but not the outputs. Many a gamer has found that out the hard way when they tried to mirror to TV and discovered that their laptop monitor was the only thing connected to the video output for their discrete gpu lol.

Well, the PC has lasted 8 years without an upgrade so that's pretty good value from the i7, I'd say. For the video card, all I can say is oh well. That's so far out of my budget I'm going to just bow out of the video game discussions from now on, methinks.

The 3060 Ti is surprisingly close to the 3070 in performance, and should be more readily available within a month or so. If your monitor isn't 1440p or 120hz, that should be ample.

You could look at some of the 2080s probably. Those aren't as pricey as the brand new stuff that has come out and still more than capable from my understanding.
