To be fair a similar thing seems to exist with those that shift to the left (or even selective convergences like the "never Trump" republicans), but usually with politicians and business figures rather than pundits and commentators.
Yea, it was amazing how glorified McCain became in his final years because of his feud with Trump and his votes. Romney also gets better props than previously killing people under Bain. Bush is seen in a better light too but I think that’s just because enough time has gone by and people seem to look better at prior times. Clinton had a similar bump at one time.
