A Citi research report was just released stating that Illinois will once again have its credit rating downgraded if the Democrats' progressive income tax bill isn't passed. Meanwhile, millions upon millions are being spent against it.

For some history, Bruce Rauner was elected to tackle this issue. His solution was to stop paying state pensions and defund education while giving tax breaks to millionaires. The result was financial catastrophe, and the State Supreme Court ruled that the constitution required the pensions be honored.

Given that expenses are fixed - largely due to constitutionally-protected pension obligations and constitutionally-enshrined rights to local government - literally the only way to balance the budget is to raise revenue. Yet Republicans are fiercely against it.

Just goes to show that the GOP the country over is by far the more fiscally irresponsible party.
