Not weird at all, haven't read or watched much One Piece but its till a battle shounen at its core. What I'm saying about Inuyasha is that as a battle shounen there wasn't enough progression with the big bad story arc. But what you and I missed is that Takahashi is first and foremost a romantic comedy writer. I suspect if you go back and watch the series with that in mind you might enjoy it more.
Lots of battle shounens have a romantic subplot but they are often dragged on and not really developed, often just teased a bit here and there and then resolved quickly in the end. Inuyasha flipped the script and did that with the actual big bad story arc and instead fleshed out the romantic subplots more.
Imagine if frequently in between doing ninja shit, Naruto and Hinata had romantic comedy shenanigans or Sakura had an episode where she and Rock Lee actually went on a few dates or heck even had an entire romantic arc. That's kinda what Inuyasha did. Man now that I think about that probably would've made Naruto more bearable, I wish we had more battle shounens like that. When its all battling all the time, the stakes and tensions around the battles can feel diminished over time. Breaking that pacing up with slice of life/romantic comedy stuff can make those battle moments all the better.
I liked it at the time but I am not sure I'd recommend it now unless you're the type of person who sets aside lots of time for anime. As a kid I would DVR the episodes, two a night on Toonami, and then binge ten episodes on the weekend. Nowadays I barely watch anime so if I am going to set aside time for one it better be fucking good. Not sure I could say that for Inuyasha despite admiring how unique of a series it is.
