Yeah, not going to lie, coming to terms with who Buckley actually was is pretty rough when you're brought up Conservative. I was always taught he kept the crazies like the Birchers out of the party but when you dig into some of his stuff you realize that may have just been because he found them to be a political liability. I was raised socially conservative, but my father was never into conservatism as a dogma. So I was brought to sympathetic to social conservatism and supportive of Bush, Dole, Perot, etc., but never brought up to revere ideological icons like Buckley. I'd like to think my father, who has since moved probably about as far left as you have, would have always recognized Buckley for being a sleazy, hateful hack whose entire ideology was determined by the partisan politics of his times.
