That's because the idea of a society where there are no classes, no one is your boss, and everyone in your community is taken care for is very appealing to a ton of people. So much so that vast, popular, social movements in every part of the world have taken hold with this end in mind.
And nothing gets done because there is no structure, order or hierarchy to keep the ball spinning. Incentive and the means to rise higher are always virtuous thoughts in the mind of a human being.

While there might be something to this criticism, you miss the point by offering it there.

Could've quoted the whole post, the intent and results remain the same.

The point is just that the Marxist vision (regardless of the flaws it has) is appealing to far more people than the Objectivist one is.

Well, I think Bloom has a very strong thesis that would argue heavily in favor of Shakespeare's profundity. But why limit the question to the English-speaking world? That Bloom expresses his thesis in such terms sort of concedes my point in part.

To be clear, I'm not arguing that art and substance should be separated, I'm just speaking to Jack's question of understanding of the human condition and arguing that-- for an English speaker-- it is difficult to make an objective judgment on the relative profundity of, let's say Shakespeare versus Dante or Dostoyevsky.

Our minds are simply too colored by Shakespeare's absolute mastery of our native language.

I think we basically agree, except possibly as a matter of emphasis.

And for my part I honestly don't care if I convince a single person to get into Objectivism. Conversion is not my goal. I think it's interesting but if you don't that's fine. You do you. I just want (a) to be able to do me, and I resent not being allowed to by people who whine about fascism every other sentence and then conduct themselves like damn good fascists, and (b) to be able to set the Rand record straight so that even if people want to hate her guts everyone is at least on the same page and dealing with her actual ideas and arguments rather than ludicrously caricatured strawmen built by people who've never actually read anything she ever wrote. As a scholar, such conduct is so unprofessional, so hideously ideologically motivated, that it is actually gross. I would never dream of even opening my mouth on a subject unless I had an informed opinion, and if for some reason I was dragged into a conversation in which I was over my head I would admit it straightaway. But the number of people who so casually and so confidently dismiss Rand (among others) without even possessing the ability to name a single one of her nonfiction writings (if they could even name one of her fiction books) is downright staggering.

Thanks for all the help man. May harass you more once it gets closer to buy. If that's ok.
r/HardwareSwap is awesome if you don't mind buying used. And hit up madmick's threads in The Arcade about hardware.

Hey man, I'm not stopping you from setting any records straight or writing about whatever you want to write about. I have read enough of her stuff to know that I'm not interested in the rest, and I yield the floor on that one. Good luck with the book.

I was just using your post as a springboard. I wasn't lumping you in with the anti-fascist fascists. Hell, I've said it before - @Tycho Brah knows it, which is why he made that joke about citing him - I much prefer the conversations that I have on Sherdog to the conversations that I have with academics. The sharper folks with whom I've conversed on here could slice the majority of academics I've had to listen to talk about shit into ribbons. That should reflect poorly on academia, but it's also a genuine compliment to the fine folks of Sherdog.

If only I weren't too busy trying to get academics to let me write about Ayn Rand, maybe I could get them to make Sherdog accounts so that we could start having some real conversations :D

@Sketch Zebby is back (again). That didn't take long.

Heh, maybe he'll be calmer for a bit. Just needed a ban and a trip to Disney World to relax, he's goes there so often and enjoys it more than his kids. Will be fun when Mr.Camden makes another appearance too.
