I know new outlets are being forced to a subscription model more and more but the more that do it, the more concerning it becomes. Like when I go to read up on a topic and the first three articles I go to read are behind a paywall, how is someone even supposed to get educated on an issue? I could see myself buying a subscription to one of these places eventually but not multiple sites every time I want to see a single article in that month.

Makes me wonder if they could create a network/ bundle subscription model. You pay X for a log in that works on any of those sites and it gives you access to a certain amount of articles a month or even a premium subscription that gets you unlimited access for a higher price. I hate bundling in the media market usually but this one could be great if it were an optional route.

They're doing it because of adblockers tanking revenue. But it's their own fault for either making the mobile sites so ad heavy they were a bloated mess to load on phones and even some desktops, or allowing ads that were nothing more than spyware loaders or browser hijackers. Or the worst of them, ads with sounds that you could NOT TURN OFF.

They've tried it with automotive and motorcycle publications (such as Motortrend) after the classified advertising, product advertising and parts/clothing retailing for monetisation failed. They've overwhelmingly failed though.
Most of the print publications have been replaced by, "social media influencers" and the print publications that attempted to transition tended not to do well.
I haven't seen the same thing with science and political periodicals though. They basically just dropped their subscription prices and went purely digital (often with the sort of limited "free" articles as teasers, or free access to articles over a year old).

God damn it's frustrating. But for some good news.

Two cops in Oklahoma are being charged for murder for tasing a man more than fifty times.

Three police officers who took photos mocking the torture and murder of Elijah McClain have been fired. The same PD also fired a police officer recently for getting into a crash drunk driving. The interim chief seems to be a big step up.

Despite there being a small scuffle in Denver last night that involved 6 arrests Colorado is looking to lead the way on police reform. I plan on compiling all the data on every single police defunding/reform in the country over the next few days but from what I've seen it's been very promising.

Get a load of those physical specimen.

It's good that some departments are trying to crack down, and I hope it lasts far beyond this stage of protests.

I got carded for saying I'd enjoy punching this guy

Banned members coming back don't even try to be subtle anymore lmao

I love it when it rains, a therapeutic sound that helps me focus.... Mr. @MVelsor

Leaving the object of your focus aside for a moment, I totally agree about rain but only when it is warm. I was sunbathing on the balcony when a light shower passed over. It was delightfully refreshing and inspired my latest hiaku, though it's not finished yet.
RIP to a true legend. this one stings.

You're basically longing to have Compuserve resurrected from the dead LOL

Yeah departments across the country are actually cutting their dead weight. I think the city governments noticed that the chaos basically died down when their officers quit beating the shit out of people and they can't handle sustained chaos where the people actually could.

It's all about making sure meaningful legislation is passed though and we're actually seeing it.

All of the legislation that has been passed in the last couple of weeks flies in the face of the dorks who say "protesting doesn't do anything" or "what are riots going to accomplish".

And when legislative changes DO happen, they bitch and moan at the government for "bending the knee".

Make up your mind: Either protests are strong displays of citizen power, or they're worthless.

Asking for moral consistency from most Americans is as futile as ordering ice cream at McDonalds.

Im a bit too young to know that but reading it on Wikipedia, it doesn’t sound like the same idea. I just don’t want to have to sign up for 4-5 publications and have separate log ins for each. I suppose a Facebook login could solve that but it still wouldn’t eliminate multiple subscriptions when I may not read an article for one of them in a certain month.

Not really a surprise from the crowd that bitches about "identity politics" but couldn't define the term with Google.
