The funny thing is that without big federal aid to states, which Democrats support and Republicans don't, the police will have to be defunded for real.

Yeah, federal defunding everything except the military is a basic tenet of gop policy, their branding is just better.

There was a good article in the Washington Post last week about Baltimore that tackled the issue of how funding for police has become less and less attached to actual efficacy in policing. The profession is institutionally hostile to reform and will gladly exploit investment of resources and flout civic duties.

How much do police unions play into that, I wonder? I’m skeptical of the idea that cutbacks will improve police/citizen relationships (redirecting funds makes plenty of sense, though), but I also don’t think we need to be held hostage by the industry.
Scrap it and start over for all I care, but let’s figure out a way to replace bad people with good people. Higher standards usually go along with higher costs in vetting, training, wages, etc.

My new program I was trying to get off the ground, LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion), which intended to replace incarceration with placement into treatment facilities, got defunded. Supposedly because of COVID-19 related budgetary concerns.

I think it could have done a lot of good so I’m pretty sad about it.

The Feds are locking people up over Facebook posts. I post political news on my social media but people need to learn COINTELPRO is alive and well. Especially under Trump. It's a shame Red Hats are more upset they can't call people the N word on Facebook and get away with it anymore instead of the Federal Government snatching up protesters over Facebook posts.
