I got a snake head once just dipping a net in the water when I saw a stationery fish by the dock putting a canoe in on the Mississippi waters. The thing had some viscous teeth. I have no idea what it was doing just chilling there weirdly like that, and to not easily move when the net went after it. Just used to being the meanest fish around so not afraid of anything?

The horrifying thing about them? They can breathe air on land. They'll move from body of water to another by shimmying through wet grass after a good rain. They're like the ultimate invasive species. Definitely kill those things. Have to like chop it's head off or even shoot it. Throwing on shore won't do any good.

Fish for it like you would aggressive bass. Shallow crank baits, and I've head of surface poppers working.

Sci-fi made a few movies based on these things a while ago, Snakehead Terror and Frankenfish. I saw some of Snakehead Terror and it seem like usual Sci-fi trash but I also saw almost all of Frankenfish and I remember thinking that by Sci-Fi standards it was pretty decent. First and third act were pretty by the book but the second act was above average for a creature feature, at least from what I remember. This scene is the one that sticks out the most in my mind

Btw the WR would hate this movie. The main character is a black female lawyer who is dating a white soy boy fellow lawyer. By the end of the movie she reconnects with her black childhood friend from the bayou and they hook up with the white soy boy getting eaten by the snakehead fish in the end.

Then again maybe they would like it due to the fact that the mixed race couple breaks up with the hoity toity lawyer getting ditched for a rugged gun toting rural Southern male.

Seems to me that defunding the police and the prison system is a more than reasonable course of action.

I’m a fan of reducing police responsibility by making fewer things criminal or within the cops purview (drugs being the obvious big hitter), but we have to rebrand the idea of defunding. Money needs to be spent to improve such an essential service, just like schools and teachers.

I’m a fan of reducing police responsibility by making fewer things criminal or within the cops purview (drugs being the obvious big hitter), but we have to rebrand the idea of defunding. Money needs to be spent to improve such an essential service, just like schools and teachers.

The fact that it’s a low frequency allows it to penetrate into the vehicle much better than a traditional siren, and the fact that it modulates, it grabs a person’s attention a lot more effectively. With the higher frequency of a standard siren means that it is very directional, so if you’re not in line with the speaker of the siren, it is not as effective. They claim that these sirens are for people using headphones, playing loud music etc, and I get that, but there is definitely a military style element to these. It's surreal when you hear it in real life up close.

There was a good article in the Washington Post last week about Baltimore that tackled the issue of how funding for police has become less and less attached to actual efficacy in policing. The profession is institutionally hostile to reform and will gladly exploit investment of resources and flout civic duties.

you think those are bad (they are)? you should experience the FDNY rushing to 5 alarm fires. you could yell at the top of your lungs & the person next to you still won't hear you. the sirens are bad enough, but there's this one MEGA horn they blast at every intersection.

also, here in Queens air traffic is redirected during every US Open, so as to not fly over the stadiums. the planes are so fucking loud & obnoxious, & sometimes go by every ten minutes at certain times of the day.

I actually haven't really heard any fire trucks in NYC. Weird, I've been there 3 times for a week long each time. Pure luck I guess but I did google them and those sirens seem very loud. Toronto Fire can be extremely loud too. I guess hearing damage is part and parcel of living in a big and densely crowded city.
