icp might not understand magnets but they've got smarts where it counts, yo

Id rather vote for violent j .... he has always been the brains of that operation

I wasn't aware of his name.

On the flip side, between the two artists/groups only Kid Rock has a track that I remotely enjoy (Lonely Road of Faith).

I didn't really. Recommended one book that was really great but I don't think quite what @Tycho Brah was looking for.

And on that last point, you gotta check out the "eggs in one basket" thread. Good lord.

What book ? I missed it.

I am scared to look, is it better than blame liberals for racist Chinese against the black corona virus

Yeah, but how is he in a cage match?

And yet you remembered a name I haven't used in 6 years.

Well, I actually attended UF so remembering "MistoGators" wasn't hard.

Also, remembering a screen name > remembering the content of a few posts.

Your crush on me >>> my crush on you.

Meanwhile, Aeroflot is taking forever to get back to us on the status of our flight and if we can get travel credit for it. God forbid you try calling them. They want you to email only, then they give some date runaround, tell you to email back, etc etc

Traveling to Russia?

When I went for the 2018 World Cup I flew on Aeroflot it was the best long flight I've ever taken. Lots of room, they fed you well, a bunch of free movies and music.

I was expecting shittiness cuz, you know, Russia, but it was absolutely top notch.

Oh wow you're really hanging grappling dummies and stuff? I used to pretend to WWF wrestle with a giant ALF costume that my mom stuffed with cotton for me and sewed up. I think that's essentially the same :)

I used to powerbomb a life sized teddy bear

Hmm. Don't have a good answer to that. Doesn't seem like a book-length question. Obvious in developing countries, and in developed countries, it's correlated with demand for labor (and obviously total national income is going to grow with the population, unless we're seeing a declining average living standard). Aside from that, there's a political angle. More growth means more people can get what they want. And people tend to set their expectations based on the past, and they can get very upset if growth slows.

One of my favorite economic history books is the Rise and Fall of American Growth, by Robert Gordon. Part of the thesis (it's like 700 pages or a little more than 600 before it gets to the postscript and notes) is that the period of 1870-1970 was a unique, wildly unusual period. In making that point, it really illustrates the incredible changes in living standards that resulted from that period of explosive economic growth (not well-measured just by looking at GDP per capita, either). That's an issue that is still highly relevant to a lot of the developing world.

BTW, that book is probably the main source of my techno-pessimism, which is not to say that I don't expect continued, impressive technological innovation, just that I don't expect it to be as impactful as earlier changes. To illustrate that, compare gene therapy and not sweeping massive piles of horseshit into the water supply. The former is much cooler and more advanced (and is certainly worth doing and working out further), but the latter has had a much bigger impact on health outcomes.

hmmm I feel I could write 20 paragraph post on the topic but can’t give you one single book reference of hand, sorry. I guess my knowledge comes from education, many different books that skirt around the issue, as well as certain forms of media, and even some of the varied views that come up here, from Marxism to geolibertarianism.

I will think on it though, JVS will have some good recommendations.

Thanks guys. For the record @Gandhi, the book Jack recommended was The Rise and Fall of American Growth, by Robert Gordon.

It's not so much that it's not quite what I'm looking for, but I already have a sort of dry book on American economic history that never really answered my question on the more generalize-able level I'm curious about. I know Noah Smith was a fan of Rise and Fall as well, and actually I asked him the same question I asked you on Twitter but he did not respond :P I suppose it is ill-formulated after all.

My question did actually arise in a discussion with an environmentalist, but it was encouraged by two other trains of thought as well. The first was an episode of that Hidden Forces podcast I mentioned earlier about the reaction of the Chinese economy to the COVID situation, which talked a little about China's focus on growth as a number to encourage foreign investment rather than on growth as domestic stabilization and the assurance of future prosperity. The second was a book mentioned in the Maclean's article I linked to earlier called Fully Grown: Why a Stagnant Economy is a Sign of Success, which seems to suggest that slowing growth in a prosperous economy could be a sign that the population is largely provided for materially.

A friend also lent me How Asia Works, which might attack the question from yet another tangential angle.

Anyhoo, I'll give those a shot and report back.

I'm curious what percentage of the population either already agrees with this:

or sees it and thinks, "hmm, sounds right."

MB calls always calls himself a leftist but has some pretty reactionary takes.

In the China, WHO thread he was saying that it was great that the US was removing funding and that it should inform them that they would resume it only if they removed Tedros as director-general.

It's actually a flight out of Rome, laying over in Moscow and then direct to LAX. We just picked that flight because it was only $750
