Correct me if I’m wrong, but were Naruto and DBS real big things in the African American community growing up?

I always associate anime with awkward neck beard can’t get laid white guys, but I keep seeing those two more mainstream shows mentioned from black friends or random black dudes with those headbands around town

DBZ moreso than Naruto just because we kinda grew up with it. When you compare Goku's story with the black experience, it really resonates with people. In a way, it was to regular black kids how Scarface is to rappers. DBZ is just universal.

The mainstream stuff I would consider stuff that was on Toonami/Adult Swim. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Lupin, that kinda stuff. Naruto was on the tail end of my school years, but we were big into it too. Where you got into weeb territory was like Love Hina, Vandread, Baki The Grappler, Gantz, or Neon Genesis Evangelion. Somewhat obscure shows back then.
