No, usually I used canned diced tomatoes.
I tried crushed last time and man... bad times. Very ketchup. No liek.
First of all, if you're using canned tomatoes, use whole canned tomatoes and dice them yourself.
Second of all, if it's coming out like... ketchup, you're fucking something up in your cooking process, but without knowing your process, I can't tell you exactly what it is. Maybe you're over-reducing your tomatoes until they're kinda thick and gooey.
Edit: If you're pureeing the tomatoes instead of cooking them directly into the masala, just add more water and cook to a consistency you like.
