Social War Room Lounge Thread #325: PotWR Edition

When you try to start a clean diet but there are tables stacked up with girl scout cookies at every entrance at every grocery store

Have you tried the app Yuka? It's great for trying to eat clean. Just pull up the app, point it at the bar code of the product and it lets you know how clean the product is and what are the troubling ingredients are. It works great.

How does it treat carbs and sodium?

I'm making shumai for the first time tomorrow. I bought myself a nice bamboo steamer.

I haven't made soup yet, but it's not on the list.
Woah dude that's awesome. Let us know how they come out. Don't know I'd brave it. What are you going to stuff them with?
Forgot about shumai. My wife taught herself to make that a few years ago. Good stuff(ing) :)

Pork, shrimp and shitake. I've put the stuffing in a bag 5 minutes ago, so it's going to marinate until noon. I'm going to T&T later to get some fresh wonton wrappers.

I'm embarrassed to admit I had to hear someone mention it on the radio to be reminded today is Mardi Gras.

Ah well, I haven't paid any attention to Lent since I reached the age of reason but I miss my mother's Shrove Tuesday pancakes a little.

I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans once. Way too many people.

Tx for the tip on the Japanese market. T&T has pickled prunes, but only the Chinese kind, which are supposed to be quite different from the Japanese one. I did find some umeboshi at another grocery
store (Avril: a place for old fucking hipsters). My wife and I tasted it when we got back home. Holy shit! That is one salty treat.

We're both skeptical, but I'll give it a shot in the next few days and make a small batch of umeboshi onigiri. I bought lobster claws to make sure we'd get onigiri we like. :)

The rice and nori help to balance that out, I think. I don't recall ever trying it its own but I can't recall noticing it was particularly salty. Good luck with that. Lobster claw onigiri sounds wonderful but if were you I'd worry it may be too wet for onigiri to hold together. Please let me know how it goes.

Shumai Tales from Québec:

It was a fucking, pathetic disaster. My wonton wrappers are small and I couldn't make good-looking shumai. I lack dexterity and it showed. I made about 20 shumai and realized it was going to take too long.

I fried the pork-shrimp-shitake mix in a wok and cooked fresh ramen for our dinner. It was good, but not great. My wife enjoyed it, but she's just happy when I cook for her. The bar is quite low.

I'll steam my shumai tomorrow for dinner and let you know how it went.

I will say this when I cook for someone else it always gives me a certain amount of anxiety because I want everything to be perfect. It's rough to go to a lot of trouble only for the dish to suck. Still you've got to get there by trial and error. I think the effort is what your wife appreciates which is awesome. Let us know bud.

I'm anxious too when I cook for others.

Yes, my wife does appreciate the effort. She's very cool.

Not to brag, but my wife is a very skilled cook and she has the occasional disaster too. If you aren't failing you aren't trying to challenge yourself, IMO. I don't think that's a bad thing if you can learn from it, though it can be inconvenient in the moment. Beats sticking to the same ol' same ol' any time.

Speaking of cooking, about to make an attempt at a really good Shepherd's Pie recipe I got from a bird in Chelmsford.

Also, why is this shit show scheduled to start at 9PM tonight? That's enough time for members of Congress to go have

dinner and get drunk before the address.

Maybe it will be decent comedy, who knows.
