Gene Hackman and Wife test negative for carbon monoxide. Strange stuff.
Strange is right. You'd think they'd have a COD by now, wouldn't you? Especially if it was poison of some kind. Weirdly, I understand from reporting on the story that "one of their dogs" died, but they never said how many dogs they have nor any suggestion about why one and not the other(s).

According to Mr. Google,

"New Mexico has been a major producer of oil and natural gas since hydrocarbons were first discovered in the state during the early 1920's. In 2016...."

I wonder if it could be that there was an underground gas pocket beneath the house that released or something.

I read they had a few more dogs one around the body and one running around outside I believe. The strange thing is that the dog that died was in a closet. Why would that be? There was no signs of forced entry but they did say they were pills of Interest found the interest in those means it could be a contributing factor and not just aspirin. I would not think that it was poisoning unless it was some family member or close Confidant that would have access to their home. And that would be hard to escape notice of who has access

I'm not a pet guy so forgive my ignorance, and this doesn't sound like something a dog lover would do, but do you suppose there could be a reason they confined the dog to the closet? Say, due to poor behaviour or fighting with one of the other dogs? It would support my gas pocket hypothesis, but I know that's still a big stretch.

My theory is that Hackman was in a bad way(95 years old after all), and decided to check out, and the wife wanted to go with him.

It's just a theory though. Them being found in separate bedrooms doesn't lend much to that theory. The dog in a closet is weird, but some people do keep dogs in kennels when they're indoors, so maybe they were using it as that, and just forgot about it before offing themselves. They had apparently been dead for weeks too, which just adds to the weirdness of it all.

The gas pocket is a fair Theory but you would think it would show up on the carbon monoxide testing on the bodies. I don't know why the dog was in the closet I'm not saying someone put it in there cuz it was attacking them or something there's no evidence of that. But it was also dead which would support your theory

Yeah it would be curious to know if the dog died of lack of water. Your theory makes a lot of sense especially if the pills they found tie into the whole thing. But strange they would leave no note for any family at all. I think the toxicology reports are going to take a week or two and then we will at least know what possibly killed them. It looks like the only medicines they found were Tylenol a blood pressure medicine and a thyroid medicine.

I'm thinking methane or some such, rather than carbon monoxide. It's my understanding that its symptoms are pretty easy to identify, and they already tested negative anyway. It's just a guess, either way.

Oh now I got you. I wonder what they even test for that. There has to be something in your lungs or bloodstream. I wonder if they even tested for methane

Edit: it looks like they could test for oxygenation in the blood and the presence of methane if they are looking. I would doubt that that's a standard test though but I think if they see they died from lack of oxygen then they would try something like that to test. Good theory we should have a betting thread

That would be interesting.

@Cajun Second guess is the missus had a fatal disease and Hackman quite elderly (maybe the dog too or he's just collateral damage) and they decided on taking themselves out before the inevitable.

Yeah it seems very plausible. The only odd thing would be not that they accidentally left a dog in a closet before they did this thing but that they had a few other dogs running around not knowing who would be by to discover them. So far they're saying it's 9 days or so before they were found. So the dog in the closet could easily die without water but they would have to have thought about that. With the money they have you would think they would kennel them and then when no one responded they were discovered but the dogs were okay. If it was done by them it was done last minute and without much forethought

I think there's a lot of information being withheld that might narrow the possibilities... you raise some good points.

9 days... I feel for whomever discovered the bodies. I have a very good sense of smell.

It was the lawn guy. He could only see them from the outside and called 911. But your right there's probably information being withheld especially if they find a suspicious.

Ug, been there. My brother was dead ten days with three chocolate labs locked indoors. No food and water for the dogs and they all survived albeit they were traumatized. He was in bed so it sucked up most of the fluid. That house had a smell man.

Not sure why I shared that.

I'm sorry for your loss. That must have been very difficult. It helps explain why you're an FFF bro tho. Whoever wrote that has seen some stuff.
