I've actually wondered about this. In more conservative and observant communities where a beard is really valued as a symbol of religious and ethnic identity, do guys who simply cannot grow thick facial hair get shit on? If you're South Asian, it may not be relevant. But I know there are Arab Muslims for whom beards are very important.

In 19th-century Iran, a young beardless adolescent was considered an object of beauty—desired by men—who would grow naturally into an older bearded man who desired youthful males.

On a serious note, most of the Muslim males I know, especially the young ones, do not have full beards. If they aren't shaved, which many are, they often have subdued and trimmed facial hair and no one seems to really care.

I will say that more than one older Muslim man has acknowledged my beard, one of whom was actually from the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood IIRC.
