Wanderlei Silva sparring Fabrico Werdum (pretty hardcore)

this is why werdum suddenly got better at stand up? because Wanderlei was trying to murder his brain? wtf

Why would an MMA fighter box against Lomachenko, when he could take him down and pound him till submission.

But I agree with MMA fighters striking fundamentals, it lacks for most fighters, but then again, this isn't boxing, it's MMA.

Three years ago Max Holloway was a white belt ... why didn't Aldo, a black belt since the mid 2000s just didnt take him down and pound him till submission ?

The answer is the when you factor in superior distance management, boxing, cardio and cage control you can nullify most of the grappling in a 5 minutes round. And then with modern TDD and ground game training you can do just enough to get up to your feet and defend all the sub attempts. Elite boxers just happen to excel in all these attributes.

Now Lomachenko is a special athlete on his own and has more than 5 years of grappling training

If guys like Max Holloway can make it with little grappling training then why can't A-level boxers like Loma, Crawford, GGG do it as well ? I'm sorry but the evidence is all over there

It's not mutually exclusive. You can train boxing intelligently AND wrestling like many modern fighters do.

Or you can train like Wand. It ain't great for your health, but hey... who am I to complain? It sure is entertaining.

That was exactly my point (well, one of two points I was making, anyway). Wanderlei is not a fundamentally sound boxer, and Chutebox don't spar with fundamentals in mind - it's a sink-or-swim gym where the fighters become serial killers, but aren't exactly technically disciplined. Most gyms would never spar like that.

My second point being that his generalization that boxers would run through MMA divisions in general is trolling at best, borderline spastic at worst.

You are supposed to train footwork and distance management, not how to defend strikes with big gloves/your face. That's why superior boxers would dominate MMA so easily, these guys are lacking fundamentals. I can't even imagine how effortless Lomachenko would run thru the 125 lbs division. Unfortunately MMA fans will gladly buy Dana's wolf tickets, believing they are watching once in a lifetime talents like Ray Borg lmao

They were specifically training for situations when Werdum gets overwhelmed in a flurry. I believe the guy talking was Cordeiro as I think this was at Kings MMA. He was saying to be calm, breathe and try to tie up Wand's hands.

This was when Werdum was just learning how to strike. Up until then, he had the worst stand-up in the sport.
This was two years (more or less) before he fought Travis Brown, and he made brown look like a punching bag.

Wat....are you saying, by the very nature of boxing, that they would be able to defend a TD from even an average UFC calibre fighter without any real grappling training?

And you're using Max Holloway, who's the UFC champ and won 12 fights straight and has been doing MMA his whole adult life, as an example of how you don't need grappling training because he stuffed Aldo's single TD?

Holy bananas. The winner for the daily "f#ck logic, I've got a point" award goes to this dude.

What a long, whiny, pathetic wall of text.

He went from tooling Werdum to getting Dry humped by Sonnen. Father time catches up to us all.

Clueless and delusional. Boxing is the realest form of fighting, punching is the first human instinct
And mma fighters suck at it.

Which is why they go to mma and not boxing or other high paying sports.

Bullshit, everyone knows that, in a life or death situation, the first instinct of a human is to go for the ankle pick.

Yup.

Man I'd fucking love to see Vasyl in the UFC with some solid wrestling and TDD.

They're basically fighting. So much for sparring...

Naw. If they were fighting, Werdum would have gotten the Rampage treatment somewhere between the 21-27 second mark...
