I'm on a similar page as you, and not even finished 0 yet.. I'm in love with the series though vaguely heard spoilers from friends for years, but finally now they are being imported to Xbox getting to play it all.. Essential media I think.

It is iam not that into japan myself since I still hold a grudge against their leaders for never adressing their crimes in ww2 and before that, but do yakuza only tattoo onis on themselves?

I mean wouldn't a Yakuza be something like a modern Samurai since they swear alliance to their leader?
