Volk vs Oliveira

I'm just wondering before the fight against islam who would you have picked in a fight between volk and oliveira?

Now after the fight is your pick still the same?

I would have dobronx as I think he would KO volk. Volk power seemed to bother Islam, but i think oliveira would handle it. The guy did handle gaetjhe afterall.

I would have favored Charles prior to Alex/Mak. Now I would favor Alex over Charles.

I always favored Volk vs Charles, Charles throws single strikes the majority of the time and would struggle to find Volk. Charles is super hittable too and Volk would break him down and test that wobbly chin. The take down is not there for Charles and Volk won't play the guard game unless he's confident enough he can make Charles pay for it. Still, the size disparity is huge and Charles hits way harder than Volk does...He could get hurt, it wouldn't be easy, I'm sure Charles would be looking to throw kicks and knees like crazy.

Volk is tough and can represent problems for Charles. But the big difference is that Charles has elite submission technique, he knows how to finish a RNC or sees when the sub is not there, he will quickly transition in to an another one. We have seen that many times before. No doubt Volks defence is better than Justins, but if you need to be defending every second a different sub and not just lay there, the game gets different.

Charles is hittable and volk is probably the better striker. Meanwhile volks IQ wrestling and sub defense and stocky build would present same problems volk gave Islam.

But Charles makes it a war, makes it unpredictable and is not afraid to go into the fire to do damage. He could easily get Volk with some knees elbows in the clinch, land some strikes in the chaos and soften Volk up to get a sub - but still that won't be easy.

I don't know who to pick. Probably ever so slightly favour Volk.

I only became Volk fan after his most recent fight and I've long been Charles fan. Still, I would've thought it had to be Volk's fight to lose as he more than held his own against very dangerous grapplers like Ortega and is a nightmare for anyone on foot due to his speed, precision and distance control.

Before the Islam fight, I thought Volk was more susceptible to submissions, which I was basing off the Ortega fight. After UFC 284, it looked like Volk's defence was practically impregnable. I still think Oliveira might win with his versatility.

Volks didn't trouble Islam once. The supposed knockdowns weren't even knockdowns, They were Islam changing levels and Volk grazing the top of his head with forearms.

The crowd screaming and commentators ejaculating live on air is what threw people off. Henry Cejudo has a very good breakdown of it on Youtube.

The only legit knockdown was Islam on Volk in 1st round.

I still pick Oliveira to beat him.

If Volk can defend against Islam, he can defend against Olivera. If Volk can get Islam on his back and get ground and pound off, Volk can do the same to Olivera. Olivera doesn't do well off his back when getting ground and pounded, it completely neutralizes his BJJ.

I agree with you on these points what you said. Volk has a beautiful sub defence and great ground and pound. But Oliveiras submissions are much more dangerous, better technique and foremost better transitions from one sub to an another sub, than Islams. I would not be surprized if Volks Team can figure out that puzzle aswell.

I would have picked Charles and still do to be honest. Islam and Volk both fight fairly textbook and measured though at a great pace. Max Holloway too for that matter. Charles fights really chaotic and I don't think Volk would knock him out or be as confident following him to the ground as Islam was. I love how Volk makes reads and constantly adjusts during fights but Charles might be difficult because he himself doesn't seem to know what his next sequence of attacks will be.
