It's not actually a bad idea. Would increase your bicep and forearm strength so that you can squeeze harder. And will improve those muscles endurance seeing as his coach was making him hold himself for a minute.
Let's him practice choking for a long time without killing a man, what are you complaining about?
There's a lot of fighters who just spar to get their conditioning down actually, and that's what he's saying is a bad idea.
And moreover, Vitor is still sparring, so I don't know what you're actually complaining about. His coach is just leaving the sparring for sparring (i.e practice fighting), and not doubling down the sparring as conditioning work.
I've never watched a single count down or training video of a fighter which doesn't include them doing strength and conditioning drills, have you? I've myself trained at 3 separate gyms and all of them included lots of strength and conditioning and drills.
I doubt there's a single legit gym that just " spars " for conditioning. He made that up.
In fact a lot of problems might be coming from world class stupid conditioning lifting like Cains stupid knee lifting or El Cucuys worst deadlift form ever.
Some camps definitely spar too hard, but that isn't to get into shape. That's ego and stupidity. They still do a bunch of strength and conditioning to get in shape.
