hey, so I'm looking to add some vitamin b really just because I'm struggling with wakefulness and being alert and not feeling in a fog at times at work and also at social things when they slow and I just get tired and uninterested and I'm wondering if this would help

I sleep decent, definitely not good as I have diagnosed onset insomnia so about an hour or two after my head hits the pillows I'll be finally starting to drift off. Also have bouts of sleep paralysis which fucking suck. So unless I give in and get prescription sleeping pills, rarely getting a full nights sleep has been my reality for about my whole life

I currently take a multivitamin, fish oil, and vitamin D (live way north and felt the genuine mood from lack of sun and also feel that went away with the vitamin D and that it surprisingly wasn't placebo). What should I look for with a B supp? What dosage? What type (I see b-6, b-12, and a few others)? What mechanism? I'm just looking for a little help with alertness and possibly resting energy. Gym energy had never been a problem

Have you ever tried some like alprazolam to help you sleep? Its an anxiety medication and I personally take a small dosage of it (.5 mg) before bed sometimes. It relaxes you to the point where you do fall asleep. Its basically a generic xanax but such a small dosage that its not dangerous. As long as you dont abuse it. I find that it works better than sleeping pills

Alprazolan isn't one I've tried. Going after a prescription strength anxiety med to help sleep is something I'd also like to stay away from unless there's no options left. I've used melatonin, valerian, chamomile extract and teas, drowsy allergy meds in low doses, and a few other hippie type things I've had pushed on me by friends and family. They seem to work to such small and varying degrees that I can't tell if it's coincidence or placebo when do notice anything as its not consistent, and I'm not sure I truly get a benefit, at least not one that'd be worth the money of a 3rd bottle and continuing in my opinion. Then I go off each one, and don't really notice a drop in sleep ability so I'm not sure there was an uptick in the first place.

I pop a b complex most days. Makes my piss radioactive yellow but whatever.

Zoplicone is over the counter here, it's nice because I can get it any time i want, the downside is that it's addictive like fuck.

When my back was injured id take like 2-3 zoplocon pills a day and sleep ~ 22 hours lol.

Don't do that.

Any old B complex will do the trick?

I just remember when I was looking for fish oil, recommendations here to get the actual usefulness was to find one with a greater proportion of the omega-3 vs overall dosage than the standard 300mg omega 3 per 1200 my fish oil

I've been using "nature own" for like ~ 12 years lol. Maybe there's a better one, I never really thought too much about it.

The only negative is the B12 portion comes from cyanocobalamin (poorly absorbed in comparison to other variations), otherwise they work well. +1 on the radioactive yellow, definitely noticed that myself.

I tend to look for B complexes that have 100mg of Thiamin. That's about all I look for, though

I take a B-complex every morning and can definitely tell the difference if I miss it. Lack of motivation and wakefulness, whereas if I take one upon waking with my coffee I will be alert and ready for morning workout in under an hour.

It is one supplement that I can actually feel a difference taking.

Does it help out that full day or just that morning? I'm typically perfectly fine until sometime between 10 and 2 whenever things get slow at work. Mornings are good, then either mid morning or afternoon I hit a wall of motivation and alert levels that then roller-coasters the rest of the day

Well I can only speak for myself, but I never get the mid-afternoon sluggishness that affect some. I doubt that is solely due to the vitamin B supplement, though I suppose it could be the reason.

Those "5 hour energy" drinks are nothing more than caffeine, taurine, and vitamin B. So taking another B-complex midafternoon with a cup of joe would be the virtual equivalent at 1/100 the cost.

I take a complex B supplement every morning too, for about the last year. I don't get the later afternoon sluggishness either, but I don't know if it's the B supplement or the fact that I don't eat a large lunch. On days we have a work function where I do eat a big lunch, I feel like I need a nap immediately after.

I do often take a 10 minute nap when I get home from work, which can effect sleep. Maybe I should consider an afternoon cup of coffee.

Was about to ask about your diet.

I started running into that sluggish afternoon feeling recently (and have many times before) when I'm cutting weight. Most times I power through or drink an energy drink or something, but with it being so close to my training time, the extra caffeine made my workouts suffer. I rearranged my macro intake times to get higher carb content for breakfast and lunch and it changed everything. Your diet is a big, big factor. I also have a terrible time sleeping if I'm even a little bit hungry, so a good low carb snack with protein like greek yogurt (not loaded with extra sugar and fruit. the real stuff like plain vanilla) or cottage cheese gives me that full feeling really easily and I sleep like a baby.

I'm surprised you said you've tried melatonin. I don't think a lot of people realize that, as it is a hormone, it does take time to really show the benefit of it. Some people feel it within a few days, for me, I had to take it steady for about 2 weeks and next thing I knew, I couldn't keep my eyes open past 9:30pm (I'm a lifelong night owl and would regularly stay up til 2 or 3 in the morning). Try changing up your nutrient timing and stick with the melatonin for a solid 2 weeks and see if that helps.

Started taking a run of the mill B complex. Thanks for the heads up on the piss. It's like, highlighter yellow. I'm curious what will happen if I'm ever actually dehydrated lol

Been feeling better, but too soon to tell of course

To the guy about the melatonin. I had been taking it for months, not just trying it for a couple nights. Couldn't tell if I was benefitting from it, then when I ran out once and didn't buy another bottle couldn't notice a difference so I chose to save the money

One thing I've found about melanin. I need to take a very low dose like 1/2 to 1/4 of a pill and let it dissolve under my tongue before washing it down.

Works much better for me that way.
