Polaris 3 is just days away and the premier promotion in professional grappling is ramping up the hype for their upcoming show with a stellar series of videos. Ahead of the April 2nd show, Polaris have been following their competitors through their trials and tribulations before they make the trip to the UK to compete.

In this edition of the Polaris Prologue, Rousimar Palhares reveals that his brother has funded him to continue his martial arts career. Palhares' last MMA fight ended controversially and led to him being suspended and stripped of his World Series of Fighting welterweight title.

While Palhares is talking up his return to training, his opponent, Garry Tonon, and his training partner (Eddie Cummings) showcase the "Team Renzo Gracie" diet as they visit a donut shop in New York.

Polaris 3: Tonon vs. Palhares airs live from Poole, England this Saturday, April 2. The main card airs on PPV with a fight time of 6:30 p.m. GMT / 1:30 PM ET.

Palhares calves look like a butt, good lord.

It would be epic if Tonon could somehow heel hook him.

Well, Tonon is supposed to be technically better. And we have seen Palhares struggle with technical grapplers in the past (Belcher). So its not out of the realm of possibility at all, infact i'm looking forward to it. But Palhares is ALOT bigger and stronger than Tonon, and obviously not a slouch himself as far a technique goes. I guess we'll see.

I will humbly suggest that Belcher is not the most technical grappler that Palhares has faced, and his performance against high-level grapplers doesn't really suggest that merely having a highly technical game causes him to struggle and falter.

I wholly agree on both accounts. However, although Belcher is not the MOST technical grappler, he is (or was... im still mad he retired from a fan's perspective. haha) still above ALOT of talent in the MMA game.

On your second point, what i meant was that it has been shown that he (palhares) can be out-leg locked. Palhares had a heelhook on belcher (heel in the nook of elbow and all) and belcher defended and got out. Of course that was a while ago, but it showed that Palhares wasn't on the next level, and it just took work and knowing the game to beat him, which Tonon does. Nuanced argument, but nonetheless.

i really like Yukinori Sasa, i love how he's just laughing and saying "probably everyone thinks i am going to lose". no bravado, just a guy facing an uphill battle and still going for it.

The Tonon-Palhares trailer was perhaps the worst in the history of BJJ PPV events.

you should take a look at palhares' run in the ADCC. he was facing nothing but technical grapplers there, and he mauled everyone except galvao. and galvao was in top shape that day, he took the division and the absolute - but he struggled with palhares.

rousimar is an absolute beast physically and somehow manages to stay technical. it's frightening.

I really do need to. I haven't seen any of his ADCC matches.

I just want to clarify, Im not calling Paul Harris not technical, I'm saying that there are more technical grapplers out there. Like... lets ask a question: is Paulhares more technical than Caio Terra? I don't think so. It doesn't mean that i think that PH is a terrible grappler relying on brute strength, it just means i think he has less tricks up his sleeve. The techniques he does do, he does well no doubt; he wouldn't be on the big stage if he was just strong.

Both top level, only Palhares is a lot bigger and stronger. Tonon can shock the world, if his legs survive.

You aré real y talkjng out of your royal ass, just because belcher escaped one he attempted doesn't mean he can be outlet locked, it men's that belcher escaped once, then proceeded to beat the living shit out ofnhim.. It's really iremarkable the authority which you seem to talk about toquinhos skills yet you haven't seen a single of his adcc run? English isn't my first lenguage, but you are he definition of an out an ass royal talker...

Quite hostile at someone expressing their opinion. Tell me why I'm wrong and I will change it. Otherwise, feel free not to comment.

Tell you why? Adcc silver medalist to star with, ufc hh record, you think palhares is the only strong dude who grab heels? Only dude to sub jake shields in Mma... Now you tell me how come you are not talking out of our ass by talkjng about toquinhos grapplings skills yet not seen a single of his adcc matches?

Whats your definition of an informed opinion? Because if i spent an inordinate amount of time watching every fight before forming my opinion, i would do this shit for a job and i would be paid well for it. It would probably be on a video as well with a tag 'expert' below it.

I have seen matches by palhares, more than a handful of them, and i have seen about 15 Tonon matches. I have been grappling on and off for 7 years now, and while nether of these numbers are impressive AT ALL (and i don't claim they are) they give me a basis to form an OPINION on the subject. An opinion i'm open to changing.

randomg1t made a good point, and let me know that i should watch some of palhares' ADCC matches. I agreed with him and made a mental note to do so when i got back from work. I felt my position on Palhares' skill set was misunderstood so i further clarified it as well in that post.

To further clarify my admittedly semi informed opinion - i never said palhares was a bad grappler, he is clearly good and clearly has good technique. Although i think hes a giant douche, but thats nether here nor there. I just think, based on the information i had access to up to this point, that Tonon has a deeper understanding of the leg lock game... now calm down, this is just an OPINION.

Now i love grappling, and i want to learn more about it, much more than i know now. So im always open to criticism and different opinions. However, if we are being attacked on this board for expressing our opinions, how can we ever have a meaningful discussion or ever learn?

Not to change the topic, but I think you might be over estimating the amount of money in BJJ haha.

Shit, I forgot that this is going down in two days. I'm pretty excited!

I Didn't mean to offend you, my bad... But you were talking out of your ass, admittedly, my definition of informed, in this case, at least watch the damn most important grappling tournament he participated (since he is about to grapple not fight)...

look belcher did not outlet locked anyone, and is not by far and I mean far far far ( no disrespect to Alan, I like him very much) the most technical guy toquinhos faced, my point wa ether you shouldn't speak with such authority on subjects you haven't gotten the time to research, i do believe Garry is the most technical of the two, that doesn't mean toquinho is not super technical too...

Any ways I might sound Ruder than what I really mean, sorry about that

You're good man. I mean... we essentially agree on every point except for belcher ( I will concede that he may not have outleglocked palhares, but rather defended well), but your point is that i should not have formed this opinion before watching ADCC?

Belcher is a much bigger guy than Tonon, and was also allowed to gnp. Toquinho against a super technical feartherweight will be fun to watch.
