*VID*Young Mayhem Miller takes the Gracie Challenge vs. Rener.

Southern California Pro-Am Invitational

The Tournament
If you haven’t already heard, on May 24, 2003, a historical submission tournament took place, “behind closed doors”. GrappleTV.com put together some of the nation’s foremost submission grapplers in an under 200lbs., 16-man, NTL, invitational tournament.

The tournament format was as follows:
• 16 Invited Competitors
• Under 200lbs.
• No Time Limit
• Double Elimination
• 2 Weight Brackets (8 lightest and the 8 heaviest)
• No Stalling (penalized)

The primary goal of this tournament was not only to pit the nation’s top, under 200lbs. fighters against each other in a “no time limit” environment, but to produce a DVD like no other. For this reason, the tournament was shot with up to 7 different camera angles.

The final product will be true, pressed DVD’s, not DVD-R’s. We will also have them coded “ALL” to take advantage of international distribution, with no concerns for playback compatibility.

Wow, normally I hate wearing a gi and going against nogi guys. Wonder how long ago this was?

to be honest, strictly unbiased here, i wasn't that impressed with rener. of course he can kick my ass thoroughly, but i expected something...different. regardless he won and that's all that matters- i wonder how it would have went down in no gi.

question;

does anyone know where mayhem started training/and under who? was he a wrestler /judo guy before or just started doing im assuming, no gi bjj?

I don't know, the old school gjj those guys use isn't particularly aggressive, they usually sit back and wait till you mess up instead of forcing you to mess up. Plus, the game changes when you have a gi on and the other guy doesn't.

I strongly believe it would have been the same results no gi. You are not required to even train with a Gi until blue belt at Gracie Academy. No techniques learned through blue belt involve using the gi. Countless number of techniques GA learns from blue-black to do not rely on the gi at all. I would expect the same results.

At the time of the tournament Mayhem was training with Team Oyama. At that time Juliano Prado was the head BJJ instructor. Juliano is now at BTT Orange County (AKA Total MMA Studios).

Juliano had a falling out with Team Oyama. Givanildo Santana has been the head BJJ instructor at Team Oyama for several years now.

I've been with Team Oyama / Lotus Club for almost 4 years, but Mayhem left before I started training. Some of the guys told me Mayhem would roll with a GI and would often roll at open-mat at other schools.

Although Mayhem lost in this video, he's improved greatly and is a legitimate BJJ guy.

So nobody knows who won that tournament?

Looks like Tyrone Glover had a lot of matches so I'm thinking maybe him.

IDK who won that tournament, but i do know Jimmy Smith tapped Drew Fickett via Heel Hook in his match. Ive seen the video.
