Veterans describe killing during war

The military directly subsidizes and provides for it so it won't stop

At a certain point/level you become heavily involved in politics, and business in any organization, including the military.

That is why I will always respect Gunnery Sergeant Basilone (RIP).

One of the comments:

"And while you have nightmares and guilt of killing.. politicians having cocktails and caviar. Thanks for your service."
Damn, so true.

When people ask me why I hate politician shitfaces so much and tell me to "hate the game, not the player," I puke.

If only politicians bleed every time they fuck up...

Some gang members and prison folk do it multiple times without batting an eyelas like those cartel guys or isis.

There is a Great Beast loose in the world of men.

It awoke in dark times, to fight a terrible enemy. It stormed through Europe and across the far Pacific, and crushed the evil that it found there under foot.

But when the Beast was victorious, when the Swastika and the Rising Sun were ground into the dirt, the Great Beast's keepers found that it would not go back to sleep.

The Beast has many heads and on those heads are written names; Dow, Colt, General Electrics and many others. And they are very, very hungry.

So once a generation, America goes to war. A war for war's sake, usually, and often one that could have been avoided. But the Great Beast must be fed, and so there must be blood, in vast quantities. And whether it is the blood of American soldiers or their foes matters not at all.

And so, now, at Fire Base Valley Forge, our time has finally come around.

Today is the day we feed the Beast...

@sub_thug I remember you posting a while back about your experience killing and how it's not what the media makes it out to be

They should stop making war movies. I don't agree with glamorizing the topic for public consumption, and profit.

Plenty of War movies that don't glamorize war and show the darker side e.g. Platoon, Born on the 4th July, the Killing Fields, Dr Strangelove, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket etc

I don't agree with those either.

depends on the situation
if it's a 'kill or be killed' as our current ROEs basically require, the situation likely isn't as traumatic

IMO, from my personal experiences in war, it's not so much killing others that messes people up as seeing your boys killed, aka Survivor's Guilt

There is more to movies than commercialised glorifications...cinema is an art form and at it's best it can deliver incredibly powerful anti-war stories. Of course, there is also an argument made by some that despite the best intentions of directors it inherently glamorises war, but I would certainly say that these films - as an example - provide a brutal depiction of war which leaves a lasting impression:

“Support the troops” can be considered a magic spell that prevents citizens from effectively questioning politicians regarding where they are sent. Consent via deceptive manipulation.

I don't personally care for the portrayal in any form.

I always considered American Sniper and Born on the 4th July to be Veterans Affairs-PTSD human study vice war movies.

My dad served from 69-72. I don't think he saw a lot of intense combat, but I still never asked him. I learned that it was just better to leave that topic alone.

Listening to that is such a mind opening experience, it shows how many guys bullshit in day to day life, I hear so many 'cool' stories from guys in bars and clubs how they killed at war like it's a joke and I think to myself 'go home, boy'.

These men have seen war, real war, your eyes don't lie.

In fairness I have a few friends who act like 15 year olds and one I witnessed did some very nasty things to some afghans.

The worst for me is when guys are massively fucked up but don't die. It is easier to get over a friend who is dead than one who has lost half his face, fingers, toes, legs etc.
