Lately, I've been reading "The Vertical Jump Bible"- I wanted to get my vertical jump up, not for any real athletic purposes but just for S&G's but the more I read this pdf, the more apparent it is that a good vertical jump is an indicator of a good athletes

but just what does having a good vertical jump mean? for the average athlete? specifically, for an mma fighter?

Vertical jump for an mma fighter means you can flying armbar taller opponents

Standing vertical jump is generally a good indicator of high rate of force development. "Explosiveness." It's low skill so it's easy to compare a broad group of athletes.

Well, you could ask if it makes sense to train specifically for a measure of explosiveness, rather than training specifically for whatever someone's goals might happen to be . . . although that's not really an issue for TS.

If you are losing and want to GTFO,you can just jump over the fence and run.

So, If you're an atletic and explosive person, jumping over fences is easier. I'd never have guessed.

I could high jump over 2.05m when I was 18-19 years old. I would say I was a mediocre athlete at best. Never really measured my vertical. Recently, though I jumped quite easily onto a 48.75" box in my chucks.

Things like high jump and box jumps can be influenced a lot by flexibility and coordination. A good vertical helps them tremendously, though.

Best way to get a better vertical jump:

1) Get new parents (fiber composition is the main ceiling to performance)
2) Have low body fat
3) Squat
4) Practice jumping

None of these are really bad things to include in GPP for any sport.

Absolutely. I would never consider my vertical jump as all that impressive.

How high you can jump is determined by how much force you can generate. Force is the product of strength and speed. So someone who can squat a lot can not necessarily jump high. Someone who can squat a lot AND recruit those muscle to fire quickly can jump high.

It is really not hard to increase one's vertical leap. You just need to incorporate lower body strength training and plyometrics (REAL plyos, not P90X workout fad bullshit) into a sensible program.

The Vertical Jump Bible has several good programs.

Does it have crossover for other sports? Yeah, I'd say so. Being explosive is generally a good thing.

Agree about the fiber comp, allen iverson wasn't exactly know for being a workaholic in the gym and he turned out to have a nice vert
