Media Versez' Jon Jones vs. Cyril Gane Mega Thread of Random Thoughts

What's with the french video?
The discuss Jones' underwhelming HW physique, saying that we expected to see some superhero, chiseled version of Jones, but instead got a guy who looks like a pudgier version of his former self. They say it doesn't mean that he'll perform poorly, draw comparisons with other fighters at HW who don't necessarily have an impressive physique, they talk about Chael's theory that Jones is coming off an injury, then speculation on Jones having left exercising specifically for a chiseled physique out of his training regimen, and a whole more lot of pointless talk about physique not necessarily being an indicator of fighting ability.

wonder what he's been up to in his spare time.

He's quite obviously put on some size but didn't want to bulk up too much muscular wise which would affect any speed advantage he might have coming up from LHW.

It's fine.

The MAIN reason for swimming is cardio for a high level fighter who just tacked on significant weight to fight at heavy.

That's what we call obvious in this game.

I'm really fascinated on how Jon is going to look ( as in fighting) against Gane.
I have no idea what to expect given the time away and how pedestrian he looked on his last handful of fights at 205.

Dana is hoping & praying that Jon has impressive introduction at heavyweight. If that happens then Jones would've just opened the door to MASSIVE heavyweight title ppvs. This ppv will do big numbers .
It's actually really smart for Jones to focus on cardio for this fight, because that is the biggest X factor by a landslide...he hasn't carried this much weight into a fight, he hasn't handled a man as big as Gane in an actual fight in a loooong time, and this is a 5 rounder. Plus, we know that Gane can fight at this weight for 5 rounds, as he's done it a few times already.

Of course, as you said, Dana is hoping and praying for a successful first HW fight for Jones. He just gave Jones a big money contract, he let go of Ngannou, and the Jones name, although not a guarantee for McGregor type of PPV numbers, is a safe bet for good PPV numbers, and is undefeated in the UFC (besides that Hamill DQ). Jones showing up in terrible shape and getting smashed would be terrible for the UFC. Super curious about this fight, I'll be tuning in for damn sure!

Well the fact that he has never been seen CLEARLY shirtless is a sign that there is something not quite right with his physique

Two embedded have already come out and he hasn't seen himself in full length yet

He appears to have put a lot of muscle mass on his front shoulders and back but his chest and abs are saggy

He's quite obviously put on some size but didn't want to bulk up too much muscular wise which would affect any speed advantage he might have coming up from LHW.

Ok guys it's fine

Dalton has told us it's fine

Panic over

That elderly guy was landing jabs at will on Jones. Serial Gain via boring decision.

Jones has never look like a fit HW, this aint new...he got heavier, not bigger.

Chael sonnen said that maybe Jon jones is coming back from an injury , and this is why he’s doing a lot of swimming lessons. It is light on training and the body. Something is off , I have a nick Diaz 2021 return vibe here.

And you called me jealous the other day for pointing this out. You big jerk.

In that picture of him in the thumbnail he looks healthy and absolutely fucking massive. Gotta realize he is very tall and wide so when you pack weight on that large of a frame it looks different. That amount of belly fat he has is a huge advantage for fighting because your body operates at optimum efficiency at a slightly higher body fat percentage.

How will he preform and what level of elite fitness is he actually at? I have no idea. But these guys here need to realize this isn't an underwear model he's a heavyweight cage fighter. A little extra weight makes you heavier during grappling exchanges and it also allows your body to draw upon blood sugar reserves from that body fat which allows you to have energy longer during a long fight.

I initially thought the same thing about the swimming, but if you just Google "Jon Jones swimming" you'll see he's been doing it for years as part of his training. Actually kinda insane many of us have forgotten this infamous post:

So it's not new to cover up any new injury or anything. He may have started doing so years ago for that reason, but not specifically ahead of Gane.

Here Jon is swimming during UFC Primetime in the leadup to UFC 145 against Rashad Evans (timestamped). He's been doing this for more than a decade, but sure...probably injured this time. He's been out for three years, bumping up to a new weight class, fighting for the interim belt against a killer. Clearly going to risk it all and fight at less than 100% lmao

I have no idea what's going to happen, but if JJ looks really good, it'll surprise me more than if he looks really tired, old, and rusty.
