Van has definetly gone to shit. I've lived here my whole life. Homeless everywhere, people doing junk in broad daylight, CoL is asinine, continuing to build housing but no other infrastructure has kept up. Waitlists for elementary schools, it's nothing like the late 2000sNo it’s not lol nothing is worse than California

I mean, it's in Canada. Should tell you all you need to know.
Living in Vancouver most of my life, I often feel this way. But it's hard to say if it's the tourist effect. Like, if I lived in Victoria, then visited Vancouver, would I feel the opposite?Victoria is better.
Agree. If I had to pick between the two, easily Victoria. It's like a small/big town, if that makes sense. Yes, it gets lots of tourists, but it also has a varied nightlife, with much better options than Van. Easier to get around...I love Vic. Has its own vibe, but I love Van Island in general.Victoria is better.
I have friends and family in both cities so I’ve spent a lot of time visiting and living part time in them as well. Victoria is just more pleasant. Everything that makes Vancouver great is available in Victoria, and you get it without having to deal with the god awful weather. Victoria has like 3x less rain, it’s not just one of the least rainy cities in BC, but in Canada as a whole. The homelessness and crime have been increasing lately from what I can gather, but that’s not unique to just Victoria.Living in Vancouver most of my life, I often feel this way. Living here, I give Vancouver a 7/10. I really do like it here, and often feel spoiled to live in such a beautiful place. When you're at a beach, with friends, sipping one of the many local brews, watching the sunset over the lush mountains, it feels like paradise.
But as everyone knows too well these days, the housing costs are ridiculous, and often the price just isn't justified. We also have this "no fun city" reputation, that our nightlife is pretty lame. That said, I've never had problems going to concerts, and both bigger and smaller acts seem to show here. Then there's the drug problems that have been here as long as I can remember. Gentrication is pushing a lot of these problems around the city as a whole, and when you've seen it for so long, it starts to feel way too normal. More normal than it ever should.
I'd give Victoria an 8/10. Has a lot of the things I like about Vancouver, but with less of the things I don't. And being smaller, it's a much more walkable city. When WFH started to become a reality, I strongly considered moving to Victoria, but eventually opted against it since I wanted to stay in the same city as my family.
All in all, it's a city with it's problems, but for me, it's still a good spot to be.
