So I'm on a journey of optimisation, trying to fix IBS stuff and lower inflammation.

I've been interested in vagus nerve research for 10yrs and I feel the evidence has reached a point it's hard to ignore.

The vagus nerve runs from your brain to your abdomen and is a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system running HR, immune system, digestion, fight or flight etc. All the automatic stuff.

The treatment I've been using is "In-Ear Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Autonomic Function." A device called vagustim. It's basically a tens machine in your ear. You can jury rig tens machines for it but you need to pay heed to the frequency and pulse length. I use it 60min a day and have done for 2 weeks so far.

My results have been pretty dramatic, I'm probably a good subject for it as I think my problems of bloating, abdominal pain and inflammation probably stem from AuDHD being in a fight or flight response too long. I'm no bitch and have control of my nervous system and cognition, this has however improved things.

I can now pull a vacuum manoeuvre, and sitting here at my desk I can feel I have a flat stomach for the first time consistently in like 20 years. The only time I could get near it would be by just not eating for a day or so, now it's effortless. I've carried that extra bloat for fkn years.

My HR has remained the same but my HRV has improved by a few points.

It feels fucking great using it, and I can feel a calm in my abdomen that's just not been present for years. My mood is improved, I'm more present for my family and set backs are not an issue. I have more reserves and am less overwhelmed.

Studies show it effective for depression, anxiety, epilepsy, stroke recovery, IBS, ADHD, mood disorder, sleep disorders, to name a few.

I can recommend specifically if you have ADHD/ASD and have gut issues. My experience so far has been overwhelmingly positive and supposedly the best benefits take a month to develop, I'm only 2 weeks in.

Any links to the products, or studies done on them?

I'm interested on how you get on........ Keep us updated.....

The gut, brain axis is an interesting topic.....

The product I'm using is a vagustim, an in ear device, there are ones that go on the neck with a little less evidence behind them. All the studies I read use the ear ones.

I am surprised more vagas nerve stuff is not promoted. In layman terms, it is the nerve that regulates a lot of involuntary body function from the head to asshole. Stimulating it has so many affects that nothing really surprises me about it. None of it is voodoo. I don't think it is promoted or looked into that much because you can't patent a drug or something like that.

Exactly that, the entire medical field is orientated towards making a treatment that creates profit.

One can make huge strides with breath work etc but this TAVNS approach is money. Like you said the science on it is conclusive and broad.

It's absolutely mad that there can be so much benefit and no side effects. I'm sold on it.

To me, it is one of those things that has evidence, there is basically very little risk, and near no cost to get an air tickler. Something that was along these lines was that there was a doctor in India that was trying to develop male birth control with mini testicular hot tubs. It is known in medicine that heat reduces active sperm count, which is why if someone is struggling to have kids and has low count to not wear tight pants. Anways, after like two weeks of hot tub treatment the number of active sperm goes to zero but this was basically only half the story. She then had them quit the treatment to verify that normal sperm returned and they did. But then she did a 20-30 year study to show the children of men who used this treatment weren't prone to abnormal rates of health defects and she showed that they weren't. Why isn't there a testicular hot tub product? Liability and no money is there. I learned this story from a friend who was working post-doc in male contraception. So, that is why there is no cheap and simple male birth control method sold on the market when it is entirely possible.

Thanks for posting this thread, I haven't heard of this doohicky before but am interested.

Does it come with a fixed frequency specific to this usage? Can you adjust the amplitude?

Oh and do you phycically feel its effects all the way down the nerve when it's on?

How much is it on Amazon???

It really varies, my one ain't on it I think. There are plenty of cheap options for 30 odd pounds but I think it's important to make sure you can set the frequency and pulse length.

The ones I've been looking at are about 300. I looked at the studies on ibs as that is what interested me and got a device a study had used when I saw it has been effective.

I replied to this but must have failed to hit send, apologies.

It's really exciting stuff, the evidence is pretty wild and it's already prescribed by the NHS.

Mine comes with 12 or so pre made programs, with a subscription model to access custom parameters. I would probably aim for one where you have custom option without subscription, but I was keen to use the specific device.

Next if I have to get another I might get a tens machine with custom options as they are relatively cheap. You can get relevent electrodes ad-hoc, or I might use the vagustim ones.

I feel the tingling and pulsing in the ears and neck, there is however whole body relaxation kinda like the result of breathing and meditation techniques. So it is feeling od the consequences rather than the primary stimulation in the rest of the body.

Apparently a cause of the gastrointestinal issues associated with ADHD and ASD may well be at least in part due to the parasympathetic nervous system being stuck in fight or flight, not transitioning to rest and digest as readily. This can cause slower gut transit leading to bloating and fermentation which then cascades into a immune response to the fermentation, inflammation and things being rough.

This process of stimulation activates the parasympathetic nervous system to a point where it's balanced with the activation of the sympathetic nervous system.

I've seen in 2-3 weeks of use that I've gone down in waist size, I can wear years old clothes again and I can do a vacuum with my stomach which I couldn't do before. I can feel my abs etc rejoicing being able to be in their natural position when I tense them instead of being stretched over the bloat. So for me specifically it's been useful, and subjectively anecdotally I have improved mood and resilience regarding upsets etc.

I think some do it with a tool to tickle the inner ear. Others just apply a small voltage to do the tickling. Neither cost hardly anything to try. The kits that cost a lot or money grabs. The vagal nerve is just a weird nerve that controls so many things in your sympathetic system and it runs from your head down to your asshole.

So I've done 4 weeks of daily 30min x 2 frequency 25, pulse width 250.

The greatest benefit is more emotional resilience, things that would have got me hot under the collar I was able to just let go of.

Car needs 4 new tires and the electric window fixed? No worries. Lost my car keys at work for 2 days? This too will pass. I've found I can walk away from my wife being overwhelmed and lashing out, I can centre myself and provide her with an emotional anchor, reset the home emotional state. It's improved my relationship with her.

I'm no longer bloated, for the first time in probably 20 years. My sleeping HR has dropped and my HRV has increased. My sleep metrics have noticeably improved. All this I would say is in the 5% improvement range, but effecting multiple aspects of life.

My advice is that if you have ASD, ADHD or AuDHD it might well be an important angle to explore, you may be leaving a better life on the table.

What device are you using?
