I was rooting for Colby, so know that it's not like I'm biased in my response here.

By wrestling rules, that was a takedown. By most (if not all) submission grappling rulesets it was not. It makes a lot more sense for MMA to use submission grappling rules for what constitutes a takedown.

It's not really the champ's obligation to call out people with one top 10 win, which happens to be against #10. There's obviously a lot of potential, but right now Khamzat has zero relevant credentials when it comes to title fights.

It was a takedown in wrestling, but not in MMA.

This is the same issue with sub defense & attacks.

Oh don't worry, I'm convinced that Usman doesn't want to fight Khamzat. I'm sure he'll retire soon, in fact. But I also think there's not much pressure to fight Khamzat right now, the latter hasn't done much to put himself into the position of a title challenger, so what Usman wants or not deep inside is a bit moot. One wouldn't expect the reigning champ and GOAT contender to call out fighters with a win against the #10 ranked guy. Also the Khamzat hype is a very local phenomenon on certain internet forums. Casual mma fans don't care about Khamzat (yet) and he's not a draw (yet).

Regardless, amounting to nothing doesn't mean it didn't happen. It's pretty obvious the UFC just made an executive decision to not acknowledge them to keep Usman's 100% TDD stat.

Did he grab the fence enough to claw with his fingers? To prevent the takedown? Or was he just reaching forward to post his hands flat against something to keep his back concave and turtle out of that control position? Big difference.

What does the lack of follow up, have to do with the takedown? They discussed the fact that it was a takedown, nothing else. Moving the goal posts does not change it, or the outcome.

Moreover, not only did Usman avoid the topic of Khamzat — but he went into great detail on why it should be Edwards, then great detail why Vicente Luque is another consideration (and I agree, these two will probably be his best next fights) — but then he actually swallowed hard, "Gulp!", and changed the subject altogether, without even discussing the subject of Khamzat at all.

Rewatch the tape, he literally goes, "Gulp," and changes the subject.

He blatantly grabs the fence which noticeably stops his backwards momentum off Covington's throw. You can easily see him catch himself when he jerks backwards and suddenly stops because he's holding the fence.

He 100% cheated to stop getting taken down (again).

The outcome was a clear 10-9 for Usman. If there is moral victory in counting that as a takedown, feel free to do so. It dominated the narrative for too much of the round, as it amounted to nothing; which was entirely my point and is completely relevant since it was 2 seconds of a 5 minute round. No “goal posts” were moved because I never said it wasn’t a takedown. You made that up.
