Usman just needs to surpass GSP and retire

Usman had better hope he’s able to retire before he has to face Khamzat and get annihilated.

This obsession with picking GOATS in MMA has to be some compulsive disorder.

Looking to embellish a fighter by clinging to fake events to boost his career and ignoring the fights he lost is weak and everything that is wrong with a lot of greasy mma fans. GSP is probably the only belt holder to ever tap to strikes. He only finished one or two opponents in his entire UFC belt defenses and one of them was a LW that also lost several more fights to WW in that era. GSP retired twice to avoid losses. GSP is definitely not the top GOAT.

Rockhold lost three out of four and almost lost four out of four after he was gifted a win by Weidman with that stupid failed move in their fight. Bisping never beat a Top 5 fighter in his UFC career up to that point. He then defended against a 46 year old guy who retired after their fight. It was a paper belt That is the ONLY reason GSP was willing to come out of retirement. He couldn't handle a REAL Top 5 opponent. He needed a gift. He knew that any true Top fighter in either MW or WW would kick his butt. This is not the characteristics of a GOAT.
You’re assuming a lot about what GSP knew and what he didn’t.

Also, the word you’re looking for is lineal. Bisping won the lineal belt. If anything the belt Whitaker won was a paper belt because the lineal title retired with GSP.

You can speculate as to who would’ve won between GSP and Whitaker all you like, but your ability to imagine a winner in a fictitious bout does not detract from the credentials of the belt Bisping won.

Those four fights wouldn't solidify it. GSP could probably unretire and beat all of them present day. Usman needs to make 6 more title defenses for a total of 10, surpassing GSP's 9, to get in that conversation.

AND get the middleweight title. Long way to go for Usman imo

4 fights man.

Colby 2

Wonderboy, hopefully he wins.

Leon Edwards

Michael Chiesa or Vicente Luque if he wins his next fight

and then just call it quits.

Even the most die-hard GSP fans won’t begrudge him the goat welterweight title if he does all of that.

Then he can ride off into the sunset.

To be a Divisional GOAT

1) be a champion of a division
2) defend your belt against ranked contenders more times then the previous champion/Goat did.

That is all...

If Usman achieves this he is WW GOAT...Period..overall win and loss record doesnt matter only what happened within the title reign..

To be Overall GOAT

1) Be a champion in one division
2) Be a champion in another division
3) Defend 1 or both belts several times(more then previous champions)
4) hold wins over other divisional Goat contenders.

Complete this you will be consider in the running for overall G.O.A.T

Usman has to do quite a bit more to dethrone the king. Namely, not lose rounds (GSP had a ratio of like 7:1 in his career), gain another 5-6 title defenses, move up a weight class and win that title from a UFC HOF'er...

EDIT: according to my "research," it looks like GSP had 78 rounds and lost a total of 9 of them. 69-9 for a ratio of 7.7:1

You mean UFC champs? If you mean in a title fight, then there's Couture tapping to strikes against Ricco, Shogun against Jon Jones, and also Tito Ortiz against Frank Shamrock.
BJ Penn quit on the stool between rounds against GSP for the WW strap, which is much worse than tapping to strikes,
(according to the experts who shame fighters for tapping to strikes in the first place)

If you mean UFC champions tapping in general, Shogun tapped to strikes twice (JJ, and in his last fight too). Frank Mir tapped to strikes. Josh Barnett tapped to strikes. Couture tapped to strikes. Rampage tapped to strikes. Tito Ortiz tapped to strikes. Ricco Rodriguez tapped to strikes at least 4 times (against Glover Teixera, and in his last 2 fights in 2018/2019)

All of them UFC belt holders.

(And many more tapped to chokes, which is a 100 times worse)

Lol, you just made that noob tap to strikes with this post.

Always lol'ed that it was okay to tap to a choke in a professional fight at the highest level but not strikes. If you have the wherewithal to tap to strikes that does not mean you have the ability to defend yourself intelligently.

Can you list in detail, please, what allows Usman to jump GSP with a few more wins? As a follow up, some people already claim Usman is ahead of GSP. Can you also give us an explanation on to how that would be possible?

Thanks in advance,

Sherdog

I would say it's impossible for Usman to overtake GSP cause of his age and how much WW is lacking right now. He's easily top 5 tho. Maybe top 2-3 if you wannabe realistic

Lol, GSP will never be surpassed in welterweight. Accept it and move on.
He fought and beat all the number one contenders and made it look easy. After the first Serra fight, he looked unbeatable.

Keep reaching though.
Ummmmmm

Hendricks?
Get that dick out of your mouth

Even if Usman gets 30 more wins he won't be better than GSP. The skill gap between them is too big

A better route would be wonderboy, Colby, Edwards and then a fight with Whittaker at 185. He really doesn't need the wonderboy fight. 3-4 fights and he'll be leagues above GSP resume-wise, at the point he'll be competing with Jones, Anderson, and Fedor. If he keeps winning by spectacular finishes he might even leap them all.

He's already surpassed GSP's win streak at WW, 15 >13 and keep and mind Kamaru wasn't gifted a title shot after his second fight. So defenses can't be taken at face value.
Even with the conservative defense route you mentioned, he would still surpass GSP easily.

Not to mention the obvious:

Usman has been way more dominant through his career, he barely has taken any damage khabibesque in that regard.

And if he manages to retire undefeated in the UFC it's sealed. We can't look over the fact that GSP lost twice (in some people's eyes 3 times) in the UFC.

He also cherry-picked Bisping. Beating Whittaker would rub it in GSP fans faces even more considering GSP ducked him.

usman actually hasnt looked that great, and hasnt been especially dominant against quality competition. its telling that he basically has only 2 defenses against legitimate contenders (ie excluding masvidal) and yet he has almost “cleaned out” the division. he fights in a relatively shallow division, with a style that adds almost nothing new or interesting to the fight game.

so quite frankly hes always going to be a placeholder champ unless he sets a crazy record for defenses.

And what's wrong with Usman's title run?
Except that he didn't have a Serra debacle.

He should be #2 comfortably at this point. He has a better resume than Hughes and everyone else except GSP.

If he can beat Colby 2, Wonderboy and Leon Scott, it will become a conversation yeah
