Agreed. No one can doubt the toughness of the Russian soldiers in WWII, but they had several factors in their favor.
- The decision to invade in summer rather than spring, thus shortening the time available to fight before winter sets in.
- Splitting the German forces because of Hitler's obsession with capturing Stalingrad, a city with no strategic value.
- Lack of cold weather clothing and equipment, because the Nazis were expecting a relatively mild winter. In fact, it turned out to be unusually harsh even by Russian standards.
- Last but not least, millions of tons of supplies from the USA(Lend Lease)which was delivered by the British Merchant Navy in the North Atlantic Convoys; one of the most dangerous jobs of the War.
Killing Zone by Harry Macallion. A very interesting book, the author served with the British Parachute Regiment, the South African Recce Commandos, the SAS and the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
Its funny how undervauled this point is when people (at least on SD) talk about WWII
Keep in mind, the US basically took out the Japanese mostly on their own, while also fighting in Europe (war on multiple fronts) and by far out mass producing anyone else during the war. It helped the allies massively to have a giant industrialized country on the other side of the planet no where near the war that was acting as their own personal box store for goods and sevices. The Axis was in deep shit the instant the US entered that fight.
The Russians had the Germans in retreat mode around the same time we entered the fight, but the Germans could have recovered from that and possibly brought in the Japanese to help them if need be to turn the tide -if the US never gets involved.
And can you imagine if Hitler would have allowed the ME-262 jet fighters into the war to shoot shit down instead of insisting that they be made to carry bombs 2 full years before the war actually ended?
WWII is just some crazy shit, how the hell did we start talking abut this lol? My fault most likely..
