I just took up running, after a few sprints today and a jog. I got home my upper abs feel like it had been worked. but I have just been running. nothing else in my abs, just the top to the sides, anyone else get this?

Your abs are one muscle, so you didnt work your "upper abs"
Its probabably your Thoracic Diaphragm from heavy breathing.

no.

you obviously have a weak core.

you require 100 weighted decline situps in a row. Repeat every 4 hours until core is stronger.

seriously, no, wtf.

Could it be a stich or a cramp? which would most likely be either poor hydration or improper breathing technique

If your "upper abs" feel tense for a day or so after that would be an indication the muscle was overworked, but running shouldn't do that but i have heard of people getting hernias from pushing too hard when running

I've gotten back pain when I've run before but that was because i was cycling 2-3 days as well and my bicycle is way too small so i was hunched over giving me bad posture. I have not needed to go to the chiropracter since I stopped cycling on that fucking devil bike.

I think most people fail to realize how important posture is for general well being as well as sport performance, i notice when i sit poorly for a few days how much it affects my deadlifting.

In most cases though i find a sore back is a weak back

while you run, your abs are getting worked as well. not as intensly as a sit ups or crunches, but it does help with the core.

I occasionally get aching in the lower back when I run.

It feels muscular rather than anything to do with the spine, so I don't worry too much, it's not intense pain or anything.

Could this be a posture thing too?

Interesting. I was talking to a co-worker about running and she said she has sore abs after running. Never thought how your abs could get sore from this though. I never have. Interesting subject though.

Mine never got sore till recently. When I was started back running faster and longer distances during the summer i'd get the lowe abs sore for a day and then it would over...but ever time i took more than a week off they would get sore all over. I'm not trotting(per my own level of exertion) so it definately is a quick pace.

Keep your chin up and run with shoulders back and chest slightly out...let your feet fall underneath you.

If yoru slouching and running you are wasting a good ab workout.

Yeah, my abs hurt when I start running after a break, especially if I do sprints.

As a side note though, if you're just taking up running, you might wanna wait up on doing sprints and start with slower runs for a while to build a base and strengthen your legs. Doing sprints and really hard workouts like that is an easy way to get hurt, I got really bad shin splints when I first started running from going at it like that.

How is your running form? When doing sprints your arms could be jerking about and stressing out your upper abs with a twisting motion, or maybe your abs just aren't used to the arm motion (for lower abs it may be the leg motion). Running is a good ab routine and one of the best ways to cut fat so you can see your abs.

if you're running (yes, with proper form) your abs will be getting worked, so if you're running for long periods and aren't used to it, you will probably get sore at first. especially if you have a weak core.
