After being made illegal under the IJF rules, the original version of kata guruma has vanished from Judo tournaments and it's rare for me to see the fireman's carry in wrestling competitions as well which is a shame because it's one of my favourite techniques. However, the Cypriot judoka Andreas Tricomitis has brought the throw with him into MMA and found success with it so perhaps it has the potential to become more popular.

He's used kata guruma in a number of different situations, below he's able to push Makinde Adeyemi against the cage and move straight into side control after performing it.

In this instance, he avoids a sloppy right hook from James Ducket and closes the distance to perform a very clean kata guruma in the centre of the cage.

Finally, he uses kata guruma with his back to the cage while clinching with Garwain Wyatt who has to resort to using the turtle position to defend himself and get back up.

Do you think this is a technique that may be embraced by more MMA fighters in the future considering it can be set up from multiple positions and bring you straight into side control? Or do you think the reason it's able to work effectively is because Tricomitis is only fighting at the amateur level during these matches?

Nice. I really do think it could be an effective tool even at the highest level as long as it isn’t spammed. It certainly carries risks, but what throw attempt doesn’t? It provides a more accessible throwing window with better side control entry than harai from the overhook, which is used frequently at higher levels. Thanks for sharing the vids. Will be following Tricomitis from now on.

Edit: Love your username. That fight was hilarious.

Joe Lauzon hit a fireman's carry against Jeremy Stephens.

Zubaira Tukhugov nearly hit one against Douglas Andrade.

Basically, just look at it like; get an elbow control and roll them over.

This is how I normally hit my fireman’s in live. I have rarely hit a “clean” carry and it feels dangerously simple to transition to a dump, especially as your opponent shifts their weight to anticipate the carry.
