I think the UFC is gradually turning into WWE -- characters that draw attention to themselves jump lines over fighters that are much better.

Case in point, Colby: the guy is 0.50 over his last four fights, hasn't fought in nearly two years (when he beat -- let's face it -- a pretty one-dimensional fighter), and is a boring go-to-decision fighter.

The UFC used to be the place where the best fighters could fight it out to see who was the top of the food chain, but now it's moving towards b.s. matches based on which fighter -- regardless of talent (or lack thereof) -- they can build a story around. How far away is the UFC from scripting fights and outcomes?

Colby should earn his spot, and not with his mouth.

Yeah but people love it. they feed into it the storylines are more important than who is most deserving and all that.

To be very fucking honest, when colby is fighting, he is the most talked about guy on sherdog much like conor. His metrics are off the chart because of people like us. I go to the first page of UFC discussion, Press ctrl+F, type colby.

10 threads of all the threads of the first page contain colby or covington
7 contains leon edwards
1 contains pantoja
0 Contain royval

the reason he gets these chances is becase of the attention he brings. It doesn't matter if you like it. It engages you. So it's worth it to them.

There are undeserved title shots since there are belts, to he honest with you.

To see a 2003 account saying "The UFC used to be the place where the best fighters could fight it out to see who was the top of the food chain" sounds disingenuous.

There is merit in giving people shots based off of drawing power. It might not be the merit you like, but it's still merit.

I think people have gotten over simply seeing who the best fighter is. That novelty has worn off as we've seen it hundreds of times. Volkanovski and Islam aren't very popular. People want narratives. Hence Nate and Masvidal becoming big draws and the BMF title fights. Or look at how popular Pereira became very quickly.

I was initially in your camp btw, but I can see the perspective from the business side. Some fighters think that their job is just to fight and win. It isn't. It's to make money for the promotion you fight for. Chael sums it up pretty well. He usually talks out of his ass, but he understands this topic.

Colby was the highest ranked available guy when the fight was announced.

This isn't a tournament, it's a fight promotion selling each fight individually. They sell the fights they think the most people will pay for, and if someone didn't "deserve" it because it's a mismatch, people wouldn't pay for it, but if it's a fight with the closest odds that the most people are interested in watching, that's the fight they'll make.

He's still right. Just because it's not rare doesn't mean it is isn't dumb AF.
Colby is getting a title shot coming off a win meanwhile guys like Aldo, Frankie, Cormier, Romero, Holm, and like 20+ others have gotten shots off losses with far less outrage.

People are only pretending to care cause it's Colby.

None of these whiners even actually want to see Leon / Belal 2.

They just don't like Colby.

I think it's still possible to have great fights with narratives (ex: this great ground fighter vs that great stand up guy, or what happens if you put a great wrestler in with a great BJJ guy), but if you're a real fan, tell me that JBJ calling out a 42 year old that got TKO'ed inside a minute by the guy you've been ducking for years, or Conor drawing all the air out of the room by saying he's going to fight but never actually doing it, or Colby getting a title shot is anything other than theater.

And, yes, that's my whole point: the UFC is now a publicly-traded company that needs to worry about profits more than fights, so putting Colby or Connor on every card would make sense, as would scripted fights and freak shows. But for old school fans that just want to see the best fight the best, rather than a WWE wanna be, it's pretty discouraging.

I'm pretty sure some of us have hated all those title shots lol

Colby is actually the best thing that ever happened to Belol. He didn't even have fake fans or anybody advocating for a title shot before Colby got it, and even now the only chance of anybody watching him fight for the title is if Colby is champ. Even buffalo wild wings would pass on Leon/Belal.

The best fights for the fighters and the company are ones that are hard to predict but have most fans rooting strongly for one or the other.

The same people also said they'd definitely pay more and stop streaming if Ngannou was getting rich and "paid what he's worth", then when he does get $10 million and it's time to buy the PPV, suddenly it's "well not me personally, but a guy I know might hypothetically pay for it".

doesn't really matter. it's his last shot anyway, after this we get another two year break from colby before he re-emerges in a third rate pro wrestling company with no TV deal

I agree. This is the second undeserved title shot he’s gotten, and he’s boring AF to watch. Edwards-Colby is a shit main event and an absolute buzzkill for this card.

And if Shavkat destroys Thompson they'll all abandon him and try and justify giving Shavkat the next title shot over Belal. Even though Belal already destroyed Thompson too.

And if Thompson actually manages to pull it off and beat Shavkat we're going to be stuck with Belal anyways as can't give him a title shot over Belal.

These guys can't even think a few moves ahead with their fake outrage about Colby's title shot. It's the best scenario at the moment.

Oh look, TS just woke up.

The fight is taking place tonight. Get over it. This take is not new and has been discussed for months.

i begin to like Colby by what he did in the conference but ya he got an unlimited title shot just kissing Dana's ass.

No he "got an unlimited title shot" because of hate posts like this. He's one of the most talked about fighters because he's manipulated the media & fans into hate-promoting him.

As low IQ as Colby is, I can't imagine being one his marks LOL. I'm not a fan, I think he loses and I bet on Leon, but I also never took the bait.
