Underrated stat: Lyoto Machida sold total of 5 million PPVs for the UFC

It was his controversial personality and promotion of health secrets 'they' don't want you know.

I respect Machida but wasnt a fan because he gave us Shadface. Rashad is still my guy though! I did enjoy that my wife and her friends thought he was cute back in the day so we had more girls over at the house for ppvs back in those days lol

I still contend he was the last great evolution in MMA.

Anderson Silva sold 10 million and was the actual draw... and Conor sold 13.5 million in the exact same amount of ppvs as Machida and was the draw on every card

They thought Machida was cute? That's a first for me...

Machida was awesome to watch, but I think a lot of those stats benefited greatly from others on those same cards.

Ufc 94 probably did almost a million buys because of Bj vs Gsp 2 , just a hunch

Yes.
Back them PPVs sold a lot, later it dwindled down significantly
Co mean means helped sell
He did a lot. The sport is rich in stars.

Every PPV he headlined drew half a million. That's good numbers. If all his opponents are big draws...then that is because he is a draw too. That is how matchmaking works.

That is not how matchmaking works though...

While there is a synergy in some matchups with regard to drawing power, ighters come into their various fights with their own history, drawing power, etc (or lack thereof). Some of Lyoto's opponents were well-established names by the time they fought him. Lyoto did not make Rampage a draw. He was a Pride legend and former UFC champ.

Sometimes there is a solid opponent contribution (GSP-Penn 2) while at other times it is clear that one fighter is very much the A-side who is primarily driving the numbers (GSP-Fitch)...and in some cases the opponent is almost irrelevant to the buys (Ronda vs. most). I'm sure some opponents might even detract from fan interest.

My point is simply that Lyoto's high-profile opponents deserve some credit, that's all.

the machida era was short, but people forget how dominant he was for a short window of time.

Machida was special.

Would love to see him in today’s LHW because I think he would mop most of them.

I wanna see someone like Hill try and strike with Machida. Class would be taught.

i will say that 9 main or co-main event PPV slots is impressive.
But to try to claim that Machida is the one that sold these is absurd. the highest of these, UFC 94, was headlined by GSP vs. BJ Penn II.
UFC 98 i'll give you as he was the title challenger, although it's arguable if he was the A- or B- side of that draw. Then two fights with Shogun, which he was DEFINITELY the B- side of, especially the rematch. In fact, the only two fights on this list that i'd say he was surely the A-side were Thiago Silva (at the aforementioned 94) and Phil Davis (UFC 163, the lowest draw on here).
i respect what he accomplished, but let's not act like he was printing money for the UFC.
Machida vs Thiago Silva selling +900k is bizzarely high. I don't remember the rest of the card, probably stacked. But it's 80% cause back then pepople bought PPVs. Nowadays the White Housr card might sell 1 milion. PPVs don't exist anymore anyways.

It was a co- main to GSP Pen.... not how it works. Just calculate his main events will you. GSP Pen 2 was huge.

So he average 500k for that time it was good but not a great draw. I mean very good but no like Anderson, GSP ect.
