This, plus France lost an entire generation of men 1,400,000 in WW1. In all of our wars we haven’t scratched the surface of that. Don’t blame them for sitting out, they also contributed their FFL. Our current administration couldn’t stomach that.

Neither, so far as I can tell. I can't find any explicit mention to what unit he served in, but in one interview he did say it was the "French Special Air Service". No such unit exists, but the closest equivalent would be 1er R.P.I.Ma. Same niche/role, descended from the Free French SAS, and borrows a number of traditions from the British Service.

I know a guy who served in Afghanistan with the Canadian Army and he told me that he met some dudes from the 13DBLE. Said they were the scariest looking crew he had ever seen in his life.
