The UMA R81 facesaver has easily become my favorite facesaver, my go to facesaver. While I havent had much experience with the FG5000, because of the R81 though I honestly dont feel the need to get a 5K at all. UMA has yet again created an amazing product and has also show me how much I love teal.

Look

The R81 looks a little bulky in pictures but its pretty compact in person. While its thick its also surprisingly light. The leather is high quality, as usual from UMA and the stitching is very clean.

The colors are also incredible and like I mentioned UMA has made me a fan of teal. The inner black leather also contrasts against the teal perfectly. One of my favorite details of the facesaver is the cushion that lies under the quick clip. Small detail but not only is it practical, it also looks great, almost like a balloon.

Quality/Construction/Padding

The quality is typical UMA quality which means it's amazing. High quality materials are used from the leather, to the foam, to the thick plastic of the clip. The construction is also on point with straight stitching, nothing is popped or loose, no messed up foam or anything. Overall very impressive construction and quality as expected.

The padding is what truly makes this facesaver. Unlike most facesavers that use very firm padding, the foam used in the UMA R81 is soft. Because of this, its the most comfortable facesaver ive ever used. Dont go me wrong though, its not the softest foam ever, it will not bottom out, but its just right to where it absorbs shock and feels comfortable through and through.

Liner/Comfort

The UMA Facesaver uses no liner, full leather construction which IMO, is the way to go. Easy to wipe down, stays clean and cool. Also the black leather of the inside is very nice and shiny and as i said it looks good against the teal.

The comfort is again absolutely amazing. Like i said, the soft foam on the inside is my favorite part about this headgear because its almost like your face sinks in a little. Very cushioned, soft, and again, the most comfortable facesaver I’ve ever used. Come to think of it, its one of the most comfortable all around headgears.

Performance/Protection

The performance of the R81 is amazing. Not only does it absorb shock and completely protect your face but it also doesnt blind you. My peripheral vision is almost perfect and even vision vertically is intact as I can see kicks and uppercuts just fine. Yes the bar sort of get its in the way but its not as drastic as some people say, you just needs to tuck your chin the way you're supposed to.

As I mentioned the protection is amazing. While this headgear is bulkier than something like an R9, i still found it very easy to move my head and slip punches. The size is just right to where you dont need to slip an extra bit or do anything differently. The R81s protection is just perfect and no matter what punch it is or how hard it lands, the facesaver absorbs everything.

The only area where the R81 lacks protection is the back as it has the most minimal padding possible. If you order custom though you can ask for back padding.

Weight/Size

The UMA R81 weighs in at 17.1oz, very light considering it has a metal frame. It honestly feels even lighter than though while holding it. As I mentioned before its very easy to move my head while wearing it.

My head measures in at 23.5in so i went with a large and it fit perfectly. When it comes to siding i usually just go by the standard Winning size and everything seems to fit just fine. Due to the bendable metal frame it is also easy to adjust, it just took me awhile to get thr right fit.

Cost

This stock facesaver goes for $100 plus shipping on UMAs website. For those prices i think its absolutely justified. You get absolute protection with almost unbeatable weight and comfort.

Overall

The UMA R81 Favesaver has become my absolute favorite facesaver in no time at all. The comfort is almost unmatched for a facesaver and so is the weight. Whats more the price is amazing and even the stock looks as impressive as a custom. UMA has yet again closed the gap between the big companies.

Thank you very much mate for such a wonderful review......We really appreciate it....

Just ordered a stock UMA facesaver.

I'm hoping it's as good as you say!

So I received and used the R81 yesterday.

Here are some preliminary thoughts:

1. It is very comfortable and well padded. It absorbed a lot of the shock from punches.
2. A downside of it being so padded is that it felt pretty bulky. I ordered a large (my head also measures 23.5) and the headgear just felt like a helmet. It might be too big because when I size the bar correctly, the ears don't really line up. My sparring partner commented that the facesaver seemed really big.
3. I felt that the headgear did impair my vision quite a bit. So much so that I ended up taking it off after two rounds. It might just be that I'm not used to facesavers. I got the facesaver because I have had eye problems from sparring (getting another surgery today). I think time will tell whether this facesaver is the solution for me. This might just be something that I have to get used to.
4. Finally, the bottom bar was uneven (maybe it got bent in shipment, I don't know). I haven't yet been able to straighten it out completely and it's kind of annoying.

I'm going to give the headgear more time and post another review in a few weeks.
I have absolutely no problem with the vision man and my ears line up perfectly. 23.5in and a Large for me. Are you sure you measured right?

Besides that the only tips i can give you are to try and fit the headgear differently, bend the bar more or less, tighten up the lacea more. Make sure the headgear sits above your eyebrows, not on them, etc.

Its small for a facesaver in my opinion but if you expected FG2900 size then this isnt the right choice haha. Facesavers are naturally big, the smallest one i used was my Sabas but that one isnt as comfortable as the IR81.

You sure its not too big? Like i said mine vision is absolutely fine. It doesnt feel as big as yours looks too. And mine has the padded front, i didnt change anything at all, stock model.

Maybe the facesaver just isnt for you i guess, id say try it out more though. Try flattening the forehead a little more, maybe its too curved.

Also something to keep in mind is the shape of your head, mine is circular so any headgear usually curves around my head perfectly. But othee people have different shapes so some headgears just dont work

Hmm, I suppose that's always a possibility. I'd like to think that I have a relatively normal shaped head, haha... The thing is, it fits decently when I really tighten it (at least the vision part) so that I can see pretty well. The problem is that it's just too tight.

Taking another look through your photos, it seems like mine has more padding on the forehead area than yours. I'll upload the pictures below.

Its hard to tell by pictures, mine might just be more curved. But i keep mine pretty tight, a facesaver isnt something you can keep too loose man. Most facesavers arent comfortable ahha, believe it or not this is the most comfortable one ive used.

The only advice i can give you is to just keep adjusting it, it took me awhile but i found what works for me.

Thanks, man.

I'm okay with discomfort, I just wish it would fit right—especially the earguards. I'm wondering if it's a sizing thing because my R9 which is a large fits perfectly.

I will keep at it. Worst case scenario, I'll just stick to the R9.

Thanks, rmphilmacrac!
The R9 is without a doubt the better choice, that or an FG2900. Nothing beats them. A Facesaver is situational but it cant replace them.
